Hanover to Visit No. 7 Washington & Jefferson

September 8, 2005

Hanover College ’s football team will face a tough test on the road on Saturday when the Panthers travel to No. 7 Washington & Jefferson. Head coach Wayne Perry will be looking to surpass legendary Tony Hinkle to become Indiana’s winningest college football coach.

Perry, 165-49-2 at Hanover, picked up a win against visiting Thomas More last week to move into a tie atop the distinguished list with Hinkle.

Hanover ’s sophomore running back Corey Fogle ( St. Joe, Ind./Eastside) led the offensive attack last week against Thomas More with 120 yards on 22 carries. Senior quarterback Rick Webster ( Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) connected on two key scoring passes to senior Mike Russell ( Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) and junior C.J. Karpiak ( Miami, Fla./Palmetto). Webster finished with 225 yards passing and Russell led the receivers with eight receptions for 107 yards.

Defensively, the Panthers were paced by HCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week Eric Cook ( Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central). The sophomore linebacker collected three sacks and eight tackles in helping to keep the Saints out of the end zone.

Washington & Jefferson (1-0) is coming off a 42-0 win at Tri-State.

Hanover (1-0) fell at home to Washington & Jefferson last season 27-15. The Panthers trail the all-time series with the Presidents 4-3 and have dropped the past two meetings.

Manchester College (1-0) snapped an 11-game losing streak last week by coming from behind to beat visiting Grove City 24-21. The Spartans will look to build on the win when they travel to Earlham College on Saturday. HCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week Mitch Harnish ( Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Joe DeCraene ( Mishawaka, Ind./ Mishawaka) with 26 seconds to play to supply the winning score against Grove City. Harnish, a sophomore wide receiver, collected 139 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions in the game. DeCraene finished the afternoon 24-of-36 passing with 273 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Brandon Tugmon ( Rochester, Ind./ Rochester) added 62 yards and a touchdown on a game-high seven receptions. Sophomore defensive back Wes Atkins ( Bremen, Ind./ Bremen) led the Spartans’ defense with 15 tackles and a key blocked field goal. Manchester fell at home to Earlham last season 35-21. The Quakers hold a 3-2 edge in the series over the past five seasons. The last time Manchester traveled to Earlham, in 2003, the Spartans came away with a 14-2 victory. Earlham (0-1) is entering the game after falling to Rose-Hulman last week, 48-41.

Anderson University (0-1) will be traveling to Taylor University (0-0) for the annual Wagon Wheel game on Saturday. The Ravens have won three of the last four contests between the two teams including last season’s 19-14 decision. Anderson holds a 34-18-2 advantage in the series with Taylor and will be entering the contest following a tough loss at Olivet Nazarene last weekend. The Ravens fell 33-18 despite a strong offensive showing. Anderson racked up 441 yards in total offense behind junior running back Denny Kimmel ( Markleville, Ind./Pendleton Heights). He rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Senior wide receiver Hyman Smith ( Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was also a force catching nine passes for 179 yards and a touchdown.

Bluffton University (0-1) dropped a close contest at Centre College last week and will look to rebound at Hiram College on Saturday. The Beavers held a 20-10 advantage against Centre, but were unable to hold the host Colonels in the final quarter. Bluffton’s Ben Dodds ( West Liberty, Ohio/Bellefontaine) started his 2005 campaign strong with 185 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Bluffton holds a 6-3 advantage in the series with Hiram and have had success in recent years. The Beavers have won the last three meetings including last season’s home contest, 24-6. Hiram (0-1) is coming off a 45-0 defeat at the hands of Carnegie Mellon last week.

Defiance College (0-1) will be hosting Adrian College for its’ home opener on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 14-0 loss at the hands of Otterbein last week. Defiance was unable to get its offense on track and generated 122 yards in total offense. However, the Yellow Jackets’ defense was stingy limiting the hosts to just 15 yards rushing. Junior linebacker Steve Brancheau (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) was a key component for the defense last week. Brancheau led the team with ten tackles and also had 2.5 tackles for a loss including one sack and he also blocked a kick. He and the defense will look to put forth another outstanding effort against Adrian. Defiance holds a 3-2 record in the series with Adrian over the past five years, but has dropped the last two meetings. The Yellow Jackets fell at Adrian last season, 34-0. Adrian (1-0) is coming off a 61-14 home win against Heidelberg.

Franklin College (0-1) fell to host Ohio Wesleyan, 30-14, last week and will look to get in the win column when it travels to Olivet (MI) College on Saturday. The Grizzlies were unable to get their potent offense going against Ohio Wesleyan and could not overcome an early deficit. Defensively for the Grizzlies, sophomore linebacker Lance Pickrell stood out with a team-high 13 tackles including one for a loss. The Grizzlies fell in a shootout against Olivet last season at home, 63-62. The teams combined for 1,121 yards in total offense in the game. Saturday’s game will be the season-opener for the Comets.

The College of Mount St. Joseph (1-0) won its’ eleventh straight regular season game by coming from behind against host Wilmington College last weekend. The Lions pulled out a 21-18 win and will look to continue their run against future conference-foe Rose-Hulman on Saturday. Mount St. Joseph’s Andy Wellendorf ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) picked up where he ended the 2004 campaign and caught seven balls for 107 yards and two touchdowns against Wilmington. He stood out in a game dominated by both defenses. The Mount held Wilmington to just 110 yards in total offense and one yard rushing. Defensively, the Lions were led by sophomore defensive lineman Marshall Root ( Cincinnati, Ohio/ Anderson) who had 10 tackles including three for a loss. Root and Wellendorf will again be key factors as the Lions travel to Rose-Hulman. The Lions defeated the Engineers last season, 21-3, and hold a 3-0 all-time series edge. Rose-Hulman (1-0) is coming into the game following a 48-41 win against Earlham last week.
