Women’s Soccer Teams Gearing Up for HCAC Season

September 22, 2005

The HCAC women’s soccer teams will begin to wind down non-conference matches this week and prepare for the start of the conference portion of their schedules. Several teams have difficult tests against solid non-conference opponents this week.

Manchester (5-1-1) holds the conference’s top non-conference record and started the season 4-0. The Spartans will have three games this week. They will host Grace tonight before traveling to Rose-Hulman on Sept. 24 and to DePauw on Sept. 17. Manchester has outscored its opponents 18-9 and have relied on the scoring ability of senior forward Missy King ( South Bend, Ind./Riley). King is tied for the conference goal-scoring lead with nine through her first seven games. She picked up a season high five goals in Manchester’s 6-0 win over Goshen on Sept. 14.

Mount St. Joseph (4-4-0) has also been on top of its game of late. The Lions have won three of their last four matches with their lone loss coming at the hands of regionally-ranked Wilmington, 1-0. The Mount will look to continue its strong play against visiting Centre on Sept. 24. Junior forward Jessey Spradlin ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) has been outstanding and is tied with Manchester’s King for the conference lead in goals (9). She has scored in every Lions’ win this season and posted a hat trick in the Mount’s 5-0 win over Muskingum on Sept. 20. The Mount has also been strong defensively allowing just five goals in eight matches. All of the Mount’s losses this season have come by 1-0 scores. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Hauck ( Hardinia, Ohio/Eastern Brown) has played every minute in goal and has posted a 0.65 goals against average.

Transylvania (4-3-1) has dropped three of its last four matches after starting the season with a 3-0-1 mark. The Pioneers will look to return to the win column against visiting Ohio Northern on Sept. 24. The match is the lone contest for the Pioneers this week. Transy has outscored its opponents 12-7 this season. Freshman forward Brittany Farris ( Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore midfielder Toni Cannon ( Owesnboro, Ky.) each have three goals this year to lead the team. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Tucker ( Crestwood, Ky.) has been solid in goal with a 1.04 goals against average.

Defiance (2-4-1) will have the weekend off before traveling to John Carroll on Sept. 27. The Yellow Jackets have won two of their past three matches, outscoring their opponents 16-6 during the stretch. Their lone loss came in a tough double overtime defeat, 4-3, at the hands of Heidelberg on Sept. 20. Junior forward Dierdre Trujillo ( Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) has been one of the top players in the conference this season. She has scored five goals and is tied with teammate Katie Klear (Sr., Continental, Ohio/Miller City) for the conference lead in assists with four. Klear also has two goals to go along with her assists.

Anderson (2-6-0) has dropped five consecutive matches after starting the season 2-1. The Ravens will look to snap the run when they host St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Sept. 23. They follow that match with visiting Berea on Sept. 24 and at Earlham on Sept. 27. Anderson has been led this season by freshman Mary Schueneman ( St. Joseph, Mich./ St. Joseph) who has a team-best three goals.

Franklin (1-5-2) will host Rose-Hulman on Sept. 25 in its only contest of the week. The Grizzlies picked up a pair of ties at the North Central Tournament last weekend. Senior goalkeeper Crystal Anderson ( Bedford, Ind./Bedford North Lawrence) has been effective in goal this season. She leads the conference with 14.75 saves per game. Senior Meghann Disch ( Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) has posted four goals to lead the team.

Bluffton (1-3-0) has only played four matches to this point and has lost its last three since winning the opener. The Beavers have been shut out in all three losses and will look to flip their momentum when they travel to Marietta on Sept. 24. Bluffton will then host Heidelberg on Sept. 27. Freshman Elyse Burckhart ( Telford, Pa./Sauderton) has posted two of Bluffton’s three goals this season.

Hanover (1-6-0) has fallen in three straight matches and will look to snap the streak at Huntington on Sept. 24. The Panthers have netted nine goals this season and sophomore midfielder Ashley Crays ( Cicero, Ind./ Hamilton Heights) has posted four of those goals. She scored the first four goals of the season for the Panthers. Sophomores Lauren Drew ( Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) and Ashley Griffith ( Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central) have each posted two goals for Hanover this season.
