Manchester Needs Two Wins to Finish HCAC Season Unbeaten

The Manchester women’s tennis team needs a pair of wins at this weekend’s tri-match hosted by Bluffton to complete the HCAC portion of its schedule unbeaten. The Spartans currently sit at 5-0 against HCAC opponents this season and 7-2 overall in head-to-head competition.
Manchester will play Mount St. Joseph and Bluffton at the tri-match. The Spartans have received solid play from all six of their top players this year. Senior Kirby Jasper (Franklin Grove, Ill./ Franklin Grove) boasts the top conference mark at 9-0 at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Sarah Conwell ( Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern), freshman Christa Hunter (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and junior Angie Wilcox (Etna Green, Ind./Triton) are all 9-1 in conference action. Playing at No. 2 singles and doubles, freshman Milagros Ridoutt ( Warsaw, Ind./ Warsaw) is 6-0 in conference play. At No. 1 doubles and singles, senior Elizabeth Weybright ( Syracuse, Ind./ Fairfield) is 8-2 in the HCAC.
Mount St. Joseph (0-7, 0-5 HCAC) and Bluffton (1-7, 1-4 HCAC) will both be looking to improve heading toward the HCAC tournament scheduled for Oct. 7-8. The Mount is led by sophomore Ellen Shaver ( Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton Badin) who is 2-7 overall and 0-7 in the HCAC.
Sophomore Chelsey Person ( Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) is leading Bluffton with a 5-5 conference record. She is 2-3 at No. 3 singles and 3-2 at No. 2 doubles in the HCAC this season. Overall, Person is 6-10 on the year.
The second tri-match of the weekend will be held at Anderson on Sept. 24. The Ravens will play host to Transylvania and Defiance. Anderson (3-5, 2-3 HCAC) has been led by freshman Rachel Koontz ( Alexandria, Ind./ Alexandria) and sophomore Rachel Makin ( Wabash, Ind./Southwood). Koontz is 6-8 overall and 5-5 in HCAC play while playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Makin has posted an 8-8 overall mark and is also 5-5 in the HCAC. She plays at No. 3 singles and teams with Koontz at No. 1 doubles.
Transylvania (3-5, 2-3 HCAC) is looking to finish its conference season strong behind No. 2 singles player Jessica Hanson (Jr., Lexington, Ky.). She is 6-6 overall this season and 4-6 in the HCAC. Hanson has played at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as well at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Defiance (2-5, 1-4 HCAC) will be led by No. 1 singles player Emily Meyer (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon). The freshman is 11-4 overall this season and 6-4 against conference opponents. She has posted a 3-2 mark at No. 1 singles this season in HCAC competition. She is 4-1 overall at No. 1 doubles.
The two tri-matches will complete the conference portion of each team’s schedule. Hanover and Franklin completed their conference schedules when they met on Sept. 21. Hanover came out on top in the head-to-head match, 7-2.
Hanover was again led by freshman Katie Fleschner ( Terre Haute, Ind./North) who stayed unbeaten at No. 1 singles on the year when she won against Franklin. Fleschner is 13-1 overall and 9-0 in HCAC competition. She is a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles and her only loss came at No. 2 doubles. Hanover (6-3, 6-1 HCAC) has several top performers this season including sophomore Phoebe Meier ( Indianapolis, Ind./North Central). Meier is 13-3 overall and finished 12-2 in the HCAC. She plays primarily No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Panthers.
Franklin (5-3, 5-2 HCAC) finished another strong HCAC campaign. The Grizzlies will be looking to again compete for a team championship at the HCAC tournament on Oct. 7-8. Franklin has been led this season by No. 3 singles player Emily Ruch ( Lebanon, Ind./Frankfort Senior) who has posted a 10-2 overall record and 10-1 mark in the HCAC.
