Franklin’s Verdeyen named HCAC baseball MVP

May 17, 2005

Greenwood , Ind. – Franklin College’s David Verdeyen ( Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo) has been selected as the 2005 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball most valuable player. The junior designated hitter guided the Grizzlies to their second HCAC championship and led the league in several offensive categories in the process.

Verdeyen led the conference in batting average (.434), home runs (7), and RBI (21) while playing in just 16 conference contests. He finished the conference year with 12 runs scored, 48 total bases, and a slugging percentage of .906. Overall this season, Verdeyen hit .387 with 20 runs, 37 RBI, five doubles, a .775 slugging percentage, and school record 12 home runs.

He is a three-time all-HCAC selection having been named the HCAC Freshman of the Year in 2003 and to the honorable mention team in 2004.

This year’s Freshman of the Year award has been given to Franklin’s Andy Clark ( Louisville, Ky./Seneca). The right-handed pitcher completed the conference year with a 5-2 record and 2.34 earned run average. In seven conference appearances, Clark threw 50 innings, completed six games, struck out 37 and allowed just 13 walks and 13 earned runs. He tied for the league lead in wins, was fourth in strikeouts and earned run average, and third in innings pitched. Overall in 2005, Clark was 8-2 with a 2.20 earned run average. He threw 77.2 innings and struck out 68 hitters. He is just the second Franklin player to earn the freshman of the year award.

Lance Marshall, Franklin’s head coach, has also been honored by the conference with the HCAC Coach of the Year award. Marshall, in his ninth year at the helm, led the Grizzlies to their second HCAC championship and a second-place finish in the HCAC tournament. Franklin compiled a 15-6 conference mark and 29-15 record overall. Marshall is 165-157 while at Franklin and was previously named coach of the year in 2002.
