Franklin Claims Tenth HCAC Women’s Golf Title: Tewell Medalist

INDIAN SPRINGS , OH – Franklin College ’s women’s golf team rolled to claim the school’s tenth Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship on Sunday afternoon, earning the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships to be held in May. The Grizzlies totaled a 699 on the team leader board, finishing 41 strokes ahead of second place Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, who finished with a 740.

Franklin ’s Katie Tewell (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) earned medalist and HCAC Most Valuable Player honors for the third straight year, equaling a HCAC two-day total record in the tournament’s 14-year history. Tewell finished with a 152, posting a 74 and a 78 in her two rounds. Tewell’s total of 152 tied Franklin College’s Amy Shidler, who set the mark back in 2000.

Two other Grizzlies joined Tewell on the all-HCAC team. Natalie Daugherty (Vevay, Ind./Switzerland Co.) finished in fourth place overall with a two-day score of 175 and Grace Adams (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) came in sixth position after carding a 181.

Franklin ’s other two golfers placed in the top 20 of the 39 player field. Freshman Samantha Marshall (Plainfield, Ind./Cascade) earned co-Freshman of the Year honors with Transylvania’s Megan Graeter (Louisville, Ky./ Butler) after finishing 12 th with a two-round total of 191. Caitlin Purkhiser (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) carded a 201 which earned her the 17 th slot.

Joining Tewell, Daugherty, and Adams on the all-HCAC team by virtue of finishing in the top eight of the individual standings were Rose-Hulman’s Stephanie Harrington and Amelia Dasovich, Mount St. Joseph’s Megan Dickman, Manchester’s Stacey Goins, and Transylvania’s Rhea Badgett.

Transylvania placed third in the tournament with a total score of 753. Four-time defending champion Manchester was awarded fourth place on Sunday, shooting an 813. Hanover, Anderson, Mount St. Joseph and Defiance rounded out the team standings, firing an 822, 831, 932, and 1,091 respectively.

Franklin head coach Roger Lundy was also honored by being named the HCAC Coach of the Year for the second time. Lundy also earned the honor as the head man for Manchester back in 2003-04.
