Manchester and Hanover Pace Women’s Basketball Field

GREENWOOD , IN – Manchester College extended its winning streak to five straight after notching two more conference wins last week. The Spartans entered the week with a one game lead over Transylvania, however the Pioneers dropped both conference games during the week. The black and gold now sport a two game lead over second place Hanover in the race for the conference championship.
Manchester (11-4, 6-0 HCAC) earned their fourth and fifth straight win after beating Rose-Hulman and Anderson last week. The Spartans defeated the Engineers 57-45 in Terre Haute as senior center Jessica Henn (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) led the scoring with 15 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Kelley Meiklejohn (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) led the effort in a 60-47 home win against Anderson. The junior scored 22 points to raise her season average to 14.5 points per game. Manchester will look to stay unblemished in conference action as they travel to Mount St. Joseph Saturday and return home for a date with Defiance Wednesday.
Hanover (10-5, 4-2 HCAC) made a move up the conference leader board with two wins last week. The upstart Panthers won at Bluffton 73-64 and beat Transylvania 66-65 to stay unbeaten at home this season. Freshman guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind./H.S.) scored 20 points in both victories, including draining six three-point baskets against Bluffton. Freshman center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind./ North Vigo) is averaging a double-double this season, averaging a league-high 10.3 rebounds and a third-best 14.7 points per game. As a team, Hanover leads the HCAC with a 41.1% field-goal percentage. HC will look to stay unbeaten at home as Rose-Hulman and Franklin come to town this week.
Anderson (8-6, 4-3 HCAC) began the week with a 53-39 win over Franklin, but saw their three game win streak end with a 60-47 loss at Manchester. Junior forward Kayla Martin (Bedford, Ind./ Bedford North Lawrence) scored 17 points in the win over the Grizzlies and raised her season average to a team-high 13.1 points per game. Sophomore forward Tiffany Bowsher (Harrod, Ohio/Allen East) grabbed 15 rebounds against Franklin and scored 14 points in the loss to Manchester. The Ravens will look for a couple road wins this week as they head to Defiance tomorrow afternoon and Rose-Hulman on January 23.
Rose-Hulman (7-8, 3-3 HCAC) lost to Manchester 57-45 in their only conference game of the week. The Engineers recorded two non-conference victories over St. Mary-of-the-Woods and Robert Morris-Springfield. Rose has won three of their past four games heading into next week. Freshman guard Nicole Klass (Evansville, Ind./North) scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss to the Spartans. Freshman center Donna Marsh (Mobile, Ala./Baker) notched a double-double against Robert Morris, scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds. As a team, RHIT leads the HCAC in scoring defense (53.0 ppg), field-goal percentage defense (33.1%), and blocks (73). Rose-Hulman will look to improve on their 1-5 road record at Hanover Saturday before a home date with Anderson next week.
Transylvania (7-8, 3-3 HCAC) entered the week in the second spot of the conference standings before dropping two games last week. The Pioneers fell at home to Defiance 80-68 and on the road to Hanover 66-65. Senior forward Jessica Gilbert (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) scored 21 points and claimed 14 rebounds in the loss to the Jackets. Freshman center Sara Sexton (Southshore, Ky./Greenup Co.) added 16 points to lead the effort in the loss to Hanover. Transy will have Saturday off before a home date with Mount St. Joseph on January 23.
Mount St. Joseph (4-10, 3-3 HCAC) evened their conference record with a 59-48 win over Bluffton. The Lions ran their record to a perfect 3-0 at home during conference action. Senior forward Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, Ohio/H.S.) scored 15 points to lead the Mount in the win over the Beavers. MSJ remains winless on the road this season after losing a non-conference affair with Spalding. Mount St. Joseph will welcome conference-leading Manchester to Cincinnati Saturday evening before trying for that first road win against Transylvania next week.
Defiance (6-7, 2-4 HCAC) claimed their first road win of the season last week with an 80-68 win over Transylvania. Senior guard Sarah Bird (Fayette, Ohio/Gorham-Fayette) scored 21 points in the win and raised her season average to 11.2 points per game. The Jackets couldn’t make it two in a row on the road, as DC fell at Franklin 73-61 Wednesday night. Freshman guard Tasha Stucke (Coldwater, Ohio/H.S.) led the effort with 14 points in defeat. As a team, the Yellow Jackets lead the conference in scoring offense (73.2 ppg) and rebounding (46.0 rpg). Defiance will tangle with Anderson at home Saturday afternoon and head to Manchester January 23.
Franklin (5-9, 2-4 HCAC) opened the week with a 53-39 loss at Anderson to run their losing streak to six in a row. That streak came to a halt Wednesday night with a 73-61 win over Defiance. Sophomore center Heather Harper (Mooresville, Ind./H.S.) was sensational in the victory, scoring 30 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Harper leads the HCAC in scoring with 15.8 points per game this season. The Grizzlies will look for a pair of victories this week. FC will welcome Bluffton to the Spurlock Center Saturday before a road date with rival Hanover next Wednesday.
Bluffton’s losing streak has hit five in a row as the Beavers (6-9, 1-6 HCAC) fell to Hanover and Mount St. Joseph in conference play. BU dropped a 73-64 decision to Hanover before a 59-48 road defeat against MSJ. Senior guard Angie Lee (Mt. Blanchard, Ohio/Vanlue) scored 22 points against the Panthers and added 12 points in the loss to the Lions. Lee ranks second in the conference with 15.1 points per game. The Beavers lead the conference in steals per game (9.8 pg) and three-point field goals made (5.0 pg) this season. Bluffton will travel to Franklin Saturday before a non-conference game with Wooster next week.
