Franklin’s Prather and Rose-Hulman’s Shaw Record Milestone Victories

GREENWOOD , IN – Franklin College’s Kerry Prather and Rose-Hulman’s Jim Shaw each notched a career milestone victory last week. Coach Prather earned his 400th career win at Franklin with an 80-67 win at Bluffton, running his career record to 400-265 during his 25 years as the head man for the Grizzlies. Shaw posted his 200th win on the Engineer bench with a 73-71 win at Hanover, improving to 200-154 all-time in 14 years at Rose.
The Grizzlies (10-7, 4-4 HCAC) ended the week with a 66-52 loss at home to rival Hanover, snapping a three game win streak. Senior forward Marty Young (Norman, Ind./Brownstown Central) scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Franklin in the win over Bluffton. He added a 15 point, nine rebound effort in the loss to Hanover. During conference play, Young ranks third in the HCAC with 17.6 points per game and stands second in rebounding (8.2 rpg). Franklin will travel to Rose-Hulman on January 30 in their only game next week. The Grizzlies hold a 3-1 record on the road during conference play.
Rose-Hulman (7-10, 3-5 HCAC) also failed to win after recording a milestone win for their coach. The Engineers dropped a 60-46 decision at Anderson last night to remain a half game behind the Ravens for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament race. Senior guard Ron George (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) scored 19 points in the win against Hanover. Senior forward Jared Moore (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) scored 10 points to lead the way in the loss to Anderson. As a team, RHIT leads the league in scoring defense, allowing 61.5 points per game. Rose will travel to Bluffton Saturday and search for their first home conference win against Franklin next Wednesday.
At the halfway point of the conference schedule, Defiance (12-5, 7-1 HCAC) continues to hold a slight advantage over Transylvania (10-6, 5-2 HCAC) for the conference championship. Bluffton and Hanover each stand two games behind the Yellow Jackets for the conference lead.
The Yellow Jackets earned two more wins last week, knocking off Anderson 72-53 on the road and beating Manchester 68-46 at home. Junior center Anthony Pettaway (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher) scored 14 points to pace the effort against AU. The junior ranks third in the HCAC with 7.8 rebounds per game during conference action. Senior guard C.J. Johnson (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win against the Spartans. Johnson leads the conference with 21.1 points per game during eight conference match-ups. The Jackets lead the conference in scoring margin (+11.3 ppg), field-goal percentage defense (43.7%), and three-point field-goal percentage defense (29.1%). DC will welcome Hanover to town Saturday afternoon and entertain rival Bluffton next week.
Transylvania (10-6, 5-2 HCAC) posted two wins last week with one coming out of conference. The Pioneers began the week with a 71-68 win over Thomas More. Sophomore guard Tim Tierney (Ft. Wright, Ky./ Covington Catholic) scored 20 points to lead Transy over the Saints. Last night, TU handed Mount St. Joseph a 72-69 defeat on their home court. Sophomore forward Blake McCowan (West Liberty, Ky./Morgan Co.) scored 18 points to pace the effort. The Pioneers lead the conference with 10.0 three-point baskets made per game. Transy will look to stay perfect on the road in conference play against Manchester Saturday. TU will welcome Anderson to Lexington January 30.
Bluffton (11-6, 5-3 HCAC) saw its three game win streak come to an end against Franklin last week. In the 80-67 loss to Franklin, sophomore guard Zach Kraus (Findlay, Ohio/H.S.) and junior forward Aaron Taylor (Antwerp, Ohio/Local) each scored 20 points to lead the scoring effort. The Beavers lead the conference in free throw percentage (80.3%) and rebounding (36.1 rpg) this season. BU will take on Rose-Hulman Saturday afternoon at home before traveling to rival Defiance next week.
Hanover (9-8, 5-3 HCAC) split a pair of conference games last week. The Panthers began the week with a 73-71 loss at home to Rose-Hulman. Senior center Robby Brown (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way in the loss. Brown leads the conference with 9.1 rebounds per game during conference contests. HC bounced back with an impressive 66-52 win on the road against a hot Franklin team. Senior guard Clint Parker (Brownstown, Ind./Central) led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points. As a team, Hanover leads the HCAC in three-point field-goal percentage (41.6%). Hanover will look to stay perfect on the road in conference play when they travel to conference-leader Defiance Saturday afternoon. HC will look to improve upon a 1-3 home record in conference when Mount St. Joseph comes to town next week.
Anderson (8-10, 4-5 HCAC) came away with a win and a loss last week. The Ravens fell at home to Defiance 72-53 before recording a 60-46 win over Rose-Hulman. Junior guard Mike Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) led the scoring in both games, scoring nine points against the Jackets and 25 against the Engineers. The junior ranks second in the league with a 17.8 points per game average during conference games. As a team, AU leads the conference in scoring (77.7 ppg), blocks (51), and steals (11.3 pg). The Ravens will travel to Mount St. Joseph and Transylvania this week.
Mount St. Joseph (8-9, 2-6 HCAC) began the week with a 65-63 win over Manchester. Sophomore forward Michael Romes (Villa Hills, Ky./Beechwood) scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win over the Spartans. The Lions could not ride that momentum against Transylvania on Wednesday night. The Mount dropped a close decision, 72-69 against the Pioneers. Junior guard Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Ohio/H.S.) scored 22 points to lead MSJ in the losing effort. Mount St. Joseph continues to lead the conference in shooting percentage, connecting on 49.7% of their attempts from the field. The Lions will entertain Anderson Saturday afternoon, before traveling to Hanover next week in search of conference win number one on the road.
Manchester (3-14, 1-7 HCAC) dropped two more games last week as the Spartans try and get back into the winning column. MC dropped a tight one at Mount St. Joseph 65-63 before falling at Defiance 68-46. Senior guard Jamaal Wade (Indianapolis, Ind./Chatard) led the scoring in both losses, scoring 15 points against Mount St. Joseph and 12 against Defiance. Manchester will look to snap their 10 game losing streak Saturday afternoon against Transylvania.
