Transy’s Vogel Named to Pair of Soccer All-America Teams
January 4, 2008 (Transylvania Release)
LEXINGTON, KY– Transylvania defensive stalwart Matt Vogel added to his honors Friday, earning All-America accolades from both D3Kicks.com and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Vogel, a senior from Lexington who led the Pioneers into the NCAA Division III Championship round of 16, was a third-team choice by both organizations. He was the only player from the Heartland Conference to make any of the national All-America teams.
The NSCAA previously announced it All-Great Lakes Region team. Vogel was named to the first team while Trey Kramer, a sophomore goal keeper from Versailles, Ky., was named to the regional second team. Junior defenders Ryan Wood, also a Woodford County High School product, was chosen for the third team.
HCAC schools Manchester and Rose-Hulman were also represented on the All-Great Lakes Region teams named by D3Kicks.com and the NSCAA.
Five Pioneers were named to the D3Kicks.com All-Great Lakes Region team. Joining Vogel, Kramer, and Wood were senior midfielder Andrew Zemanski (Louisville Trinity) and freshman forward Stu Hampson (Lexington Henry Clay), both third-team selections.
Kramer and Vogel were named to the All-Region first team while Wood was a second-team pick.
Transy finished the year with a 15-3-3 record and was third in the nation in fewest goals allowed behind a rugged defense led by Kramer and Vogel. The Pioneers ' appearance in the Sweet 16 was the best tournament showing in school history.
Under coach Brandon Bowman, Transy has won four straight HCAC tournament championships and three regular season crowns in a row. The Pioneers have made four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Championships.
