Transylvania to Add Track Program in 2008-09

February 22, 2008 (Transylvania Release)

LEXINGTON, KY – Transylvania will add track to its intercollegiate athletics program, beginning with the 2008-09 season, athletics director Jack Ebel said Monday.

With the addition of men’s and women’s track, Transy will sponsor a total of 18 intercollegiate sports. Middle and long distance events will be the initial focus of the program, which will draw heavily on the existing cross country teams to comprise the roster.

Assistant cross country coach Jason Moncer has been named head track coach, Ebel said.

“Jason worked with our cross country team last year,” said Ebel. “He did a fantastic job, and it became clear to us that we could significantly enhance our cross country program if we gave them the opportunity to compete in the spring as well. We will expand the team as interest increases.”

Track is a spring sport that will compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. All eight member schools currently sponsor men’s and women’s track and field. The team will use various local tracks and facilities.

Moncer is a University of Kentucky graduate who served as head cross country and track coach at Richmond Model High School for the last four years. He holds a USATF Elite Coaching Certificate.

Toby Carrigan will continue to serve as head cross country coach.

“My goal is to be competitive within our conference right away,” said Moncer. “Eventually, we hope to build a team that will compete for the HCAC championship.”
