Defiance’s Johnson Named Men’s HCAC Player of the Month

GREENWOOD, IN – Defiance College’s C.J. Johnson ( Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) has been named January’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Player of the Month. The senior basketball guard led the Yellow Jackets to a 6-1 overall record during the month to continue their spot at the top of the HCAC standings.
Johnson scored in double figures in all seven games and topped the 15-point barrier in five of those seven contests. He finished the month averaging 19.4 points, three rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game to pace the Jackets.
Included in his accolades for the month, Johnson earned the HCAC Player-of-the-Week award after averaging 21.5 points and six rebounds in conference wins over Hanover and Manchester. The league’s leading scorer also became the 18 th player in Defiance history to surpass the 1,200-point plateau with his 19 point effort against Franklin.
The Toledo native led the Yellow Jackets in scoring five times during the month and made three or more three-point baskets in all but two games. Johnson connected on 52.8% of his attempts from behind the arc and finished 96.7% from the free throw line.
Johnson is one of four Defiance athletes to be named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Month.
The HCAC Player of the Month award is in its third year of existence. The award is voted on by the sports information directors of each member institution.
