Defiance’s Pettaway Named NABC Midwest All-District First Team and All-American

GREENWOOD, IN – Defiance College’s Anthony Pettaway (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher) has been selected NCAA Division III Midwest All-District First Team and State Farm Division III All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Jackets’ junior center was previously named the HCAC Most Valuable Player for his efforts this season, leading Defiance to a 19-8 overall record and a HCAC regular season championship.
Two other HCAC individuals earned Midwest All-District honors. Franklin’s Marty Young (Norman, Ind./Brownstown Central) earned second team honors, while Defiance head coach Jon Miller was named Midwest Coach of the Year.
Pettaway was also a first-team All-HCAC selection and third team D3hoops.com All-Midwest Team selection this season. The junior ranked third in the conference in scoring (16.2 ppg), second in rebounding (8.7 rpg), fourth in field goal percentage (61.5%), and third in blocks (18). Overall for the season, Pettaway ranked second on the Jackets in scoring (15.7 ppg) and led the team in rebounding (8.0 rpg). He was one of only six players selected from the Midwest Region to earn first team honors.
Young helped Franklin claim the school’s first HCAC tournament championship since 2001-02 and a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. The senior center averaged 15.8 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per contest, and ranked second in the league with a 64.9% shooting percentage. He was named All-HCAC for his efforts this season.
Young and the rest of the Grizzlies fell to Centre, 75-61, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Jon Miller earned the district’s Coach of the Year honors this season. The fifth-year coach was named HCAC Coach of the Year after leading DC to their second HCAC men’s basketball title and their first ever outright championship as a member of the conference. The Yellow Jackets compiled a 19-8 overall record this season and fell in the finals of the HCAC tournament to Franklin. Miller has compiled a 67-63 record while at Defiance.
The NABC All-District teams are selected and voted on by the member coaches of the NABC.
