Anderson’s Kayla Martin Named HCAC Women’s Basketball MVP

GREENWOOD , IN – Anderson University’s Kayla Martin (Bedford, Ind./ Bedford North Lawrence) has been selected as the 2007-2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player, headlining the 12-member All-HCAC team.

Martin, a junior forward for the Ravens, guided her team to a HCAC championship and an appearance in the HCAC tournament final before falling to Manchester, 52-50. She ranked among the HCAC leaders in scoring (13.2 ppg), rebounding (7.5 rpg), shooting percentage (44.5%), and blocks (27) during the conference season. Overall this season, Martin averaged 13.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Her efforts enabled the Ravens to finish the conference season with a 12-4 record, sharing the championship with Manchester. Anderson finished 18-8 overall. Kayla is the second Anderson women’s basketball player to receive MVP honors, joining Angel Hall who earned the award twice.

Hanover College’s Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind./North) has been named the 2007-2008 HCAC Freshman of the Year. Martin, a center for the Panthers, helped guide her team to a 16-11 record and a 9-7 mark in conference play, earning HC a berth into the HCAC Tournament. The 16 wins were a 13 game improvement from last year’s squad that posted a 3-21 mark. During the conference season, Martin led the league in rebounding (11.8 rpg) and ranked second in scoring (15.8 ppg). Overall this season, she averaged a double-double with 15.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Molly is the first Hanover women’s basketball player to receive the award.

Anderson ’s Marcie Taylor has been awarded the HCAC Coach of the Year award for the second time in her career. The 18-year head coach led the Ravens to their second HCAC women’s basketball championship and a berth into the HCAC Tournament championship game. AU finished the season 18-8 overall, and 12-4 in conference play, sharing the conference championship with tournament champion Manchester.

Kayla and Molly were two of 12 players named to the All-HCAC team. There are five juniors, four sophomores, two freshmen, and one senior on the team this season. The 10-member Honorable Mention All-HCAC team and All-Freshman team have also been named.
