SEYMOUR , IN – The 2008 HCAC men’s golf tournament gets underway this weekend down in Seymour, Indiana. For the second straight year, the men’s golf championship will be a 72-hole format with the first two rounds set for the 6,709 yard par 72 Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour on Friday and Saturday. The final rounds will take place at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on May 2-3.
The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships which will be held on May 13-16 in Braselton , Georgia.
Transylvania University will enter the tournament as the defending champion. The Pioneers ended Franklin College’s five year run as conference champion, defeating the Grizzlies 1,211 to 1,243 last spring. Transy recently beat Franklin by seven strokes at the Manchester Spartan Invitational, hosted by Manchester College on April 12.
Franklin ’s Justin Ridge (Sullivan, Ind./H.S.) returns to defend his conference individual title. The sophomore shot a four round total of 297 to earn medalist honors last spring, helping his Grizzlies to a second place finish. Transylvania senior Matt Scott (LaCenter, Ky.) finished one shot behind Ridge last spring, but has struggled this season with an 83.6 round average.
Transylvania has received very consistent play from several individuals, placing five players on the top 15 scoring average list for the conference this spring. Transy’s Corey Maggard (London, Ky.) , Greg Turcotte (West Bloomfield, Mich.) , Bradley Sutherland (Cadiz, Ky.) , and Alex Rechtin (Villa Hills, Ky.) all finished in the top 10 a year ago and return this season.
The top eight finishers after the four rounds are complete will earn all-conference honors. The top freshman finisher will receive the Freshman of the Year award. Action will get underway Friday at noon, with action continuing Saturday morning at 8:00 AM.
