Rose-Hulman Ends Anderson’s 13-Year Run at HCAC Track & Field Championships

ANDERSON , IN – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s track and field team knocked off Anderson at the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships held at Anderson University on April 25-26. The Ravens men’s squad had taken home the conference championship the past 13 years. The Engineers scored 199 points in the 20 events to hold off Anderson’s 193 point effort to claim the school’s first ever HCAC men’s track title. The Anderson women’s track team earned their fourth consecutive title and seventh in school history with 185.5 points.

The Rose-Hulman men had four event winners. Senior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis, Ind./Tech) set a HCAC championship meet record in the triple jump, posting a jump of 14.17 meters. The senior also claimed first place in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 6.85 meters. Sophomore Michael Burris (Terre Haute, Ind./North) earned the top time in the 110 meter hurdles, capturing the title in a time of 15.13. Senior Matt Repking (Effingham, Ill./Teutopolis) was the fastest in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:38.54.

Anderson placed second in the men’s team standings with 193 points. Defiance College tallied 97 points and was followed by Franklin College (74 points), Manchester College (63), Mount St. Joseph (61), Bluffton University (46), and Hanover College (45).

The Anderson women’s team won eight events and was led by seniors Amanda Nagy (Wickliffe, Ohio/H.S.) and Gwen Kemple (Rushville, Ind./H.S.). Nagy won both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. She won the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.46 seconds, and picked up the win in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.82.

Kemple earned three top finishes on the day, highlighted by a new HCAC championship meet record in the 5,000 meter run. The senior posted a record time of 17:41.13 in the event and also earned first place finishes in the 1,500 meter run (4:49.10) and 10,000 meter run (41:16.00).

Manchester finished second in the women team standings with 131 points. Defiance placed third with 125 points. Rose-Hulman finished fourth with 102 points and was followed by Franklin (97 points), Mount St. Joseph (67), Bluffton (49), and Hanover (21.5).
