Defiance’s Matuszak Named Men’s HCAC Player of the Month
April 2, 2008
GREENWOOD, IN – Defiance College’s Trevor Matuszak (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference March Men’s Player of the Month. The senior track and field performer earned All-American honors with a second-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Matuszak placed second in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14, shattering his own school record with a toss of 62-05.25. That mark topped the HCAC Indoor-best list by nearly 13 feet over his nearest competitor. It was the first time all year that the Ottawa Lake, Michigan native was beaten by a Division III opponent.
The senior standout has carried his success over to the outdoor season. Matuszak won the hammer throw at the Dick Small Invitational with a toss of 161-10 and also claimed first at the Bluffton Beaver Invitational with a throw of 167-10.
His accolades during the month include being selected HCAC Field Athlete of the Week after claiming first in the hammer throw at the Beaver Invite.
Matuszak is the third Defiance athlete to claim the award this year and is also the first male track and field athlete ever to receive the honor.
The HCAC Player of the Month award is in its third year of existence. The award is voted on by the sports information directors of each member institution.
