Transy’s Gregory Selected HCAC Men’s Tennis Most Valuable Player for Second Straight Season

GREENWOOD , IN – Transylvania University’s Parker Gregory (Louisville, Ky.) has been named the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Most Valuable Player. The senior was selected by the conference’s head tennis coaches for the second straight season and is the third Transylvania player to receive the award. Former teammates Ethan Busald and Jody Mitchell received the honor previously.

Gregory compiled a 24-13 record during the 2008 campaign and led the Pioneers to their sixth consecutive HCAC championship. He was 11-0 against conference competition this season and capped the year with a perfect 4-0 showing at the HCAC tournament. Gregory was 9-8 overall at No. 1 singles and 6-0 in HCAC matches. Gregory is a three-time All-HCAC selection.

The HCAC has also announced the selection of Transylvania University’s Collin St. Clair (Hartford, Ky.) as the 2008 HCAC Freshman of the Year. St. Clair recorded a 28-13 overall record for the Pioneers and was a key component in their conference championship, posting a perfect 6-0 mark during the tournament. The freshman finished 10-0 in conference matches this season at the No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles position.

Twelve other players join Gregory and St. Clair on the All-HCAC team. Anderson University’s Nate Turner (Fr.), Bluffton’s Tim Kaufman (Sr., Lilburn, Ga.), Defiance’s Tim Kurtz (Jr., Maumee, Ohio), Franklin College’s Matt Hamm (Fr., Batesville, Ind.), Brad Lowe (Sr., Columbia City, Ind.), and Jace Redman (Jr., Mt. Vernon, Ind.), Hanover College’s Evan Campbell (Sr., New Albany, Ind.) and Steve Craig (So., New Albany, Ind.), Rose-Hulman’s Michael Schoumacher (So., Memphis, Tenn.) and Scott Grubbs (So., Wildwood, Mo.), and Transylvania’s Lee Gammon (So., Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Kyle Clayton (So., Owensboro, Ky.) have been named to this year’s team.

Also receiving special recognition this season is Transylvania head coach Chuck Brown. The seventh-year coach guided the Pioneers to their sixth consecutive HCAC championship in 2008. Brown’s team posted a 16-5 overall record and 8-0 record against conference opponents. His teams have won 40 straight regular season HCAC head-to-head matches and four singles players were named to the All-HCAC team this season. The award is Brown’s sixth consecutive honor as men’s tennis coach at Transylvania.
