CINCINNATI , OH – The College of Mount St. Joseph claimed its first regular season HCAC baseball title since 2003 and second overall, earning the right to host the 2008 HCAC Baseball Tournament. The Thursday and Friday games will be played at Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati, while Saturday’s championship game will be held at Midland Field in Amelia, Ohio.

The Lions, coached by Chuck Murray, earned the No. 1 seed with a 24-16 record overall and a 16-5 mark in league play. Franklin finished second with a 25-12 record overall and 16-6 record in HCAC action. Rose-Hulman (28-11, 15-6 HCAC) and Transylvania (28-11, 15-7 HCAC) round out the four-team field.

The Mount and Transy each participated in last year’s tournament field in Lexington as the Lions prevailed over Anderson, 6-3, in the championship contest. MSJ will be looking for their third consecutive HCAC tournament championship.

Top-seeded Mount St. Joseph opens play at 3:00 PM against Transylvania Thursday. Franklin and Rose-Hulman will tangle in the second game of the evening at 6:30 PM.

The Lions closed out the HCAC schedule with five straight wins before losing to the University of Cincinnati on Tuesday night. Franklin is also a hot team, finishing its season with five wins in its last six contests.

Rose-Hulman won nine straight games until they dropped their final two games of the season at Transylvania, sliding from the top seed to No. 3. The Pioneers earned two wins against the Engineers to earn a spot in the conference tournament.

Three games will be played Friday, beginning at noon, and the championship game in the double-elimination event is set for Saturday at noon in Amelia, Ohio. An automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship will be awarded to the winner of the championship.
