Mount's Matre Earns Spot on D3baseball.com All-America First Team
GREENWOOD, IN - Mount St. Joseph junior pitcher Steve Matre (Cincinnati , Ohio /Purcell Marian) has been named First Team All-America by D3baseball.com . The junior led the nation with 13 saves this season and only allowed one earned run all season long. Franklin's Ian Sanders (Decatur, , Ind. /Bellmont) and Rose-Hulman's Tim Tepe (Cincinnati , Ohio /Elder) were named second team All-America.
Matre, a right-handed reliever, was 0-1 with 13 saves and a 0.41 ERA this past season. In 22 innings, Matre allowed only 10 hits, one earned run, four walks, and had 32 strikeouts. Matre was one of five pitchers selected to the first team.
Sanders, a sophomore second baseman for Franklin , hit .408 with 52 runs scored, 17 doubles, 10 home runs, and 59 RBI. The Decatur , Indiana native helped pace the Grizzlies offense, leading the blue and gold to the HCAC championship.
Tepe, a junior shortstop for the Engineers, posted a .489 average at the plate during 2009. The junior scored 57 runs and added 21 doubles, six triples, seven home runs, and 58 RBI. Tepe and the Engineers earned the HCAC tournament title and represented the conference in the NCAA tournament.
The All-American team consists of three teams plus honorable mention and was voted on by D3baseball.com staff, contributors and Sports Information Directors.
