Baseball Report (Week 6) - Anderson Scores 58 Runs in Hanover Sweep
GREENWOOD, IN- Anderson University moved back toward the top of the HCAC standings with a three-game sweep of Hanover. The Ravens (16-10, 7-3 HCAC) offense exploded for 58 runs during the three-game series with the Panthers (12-13, 3-5 HCAC).
Anderson junior outfielder Garrett Stone (Ft. Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Ravens offense in Friday's 12-2 win over Hanover.
Saturday's doubleheader saw AU defeat Hanover 20-4 and 26-3. In the 20-4 game one win, the Ravens scored 20 runs on 16 hits in only seven innings. Jeremy Hazen (Anderson, Ind./Highland) finished game one 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI, and two doubles.
Senior Chris Jarrett (Hagerstown, Ind./H.S.) pounded his 10th home run of the season and finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and five RBI.
Anderson topped their game one output with 26 runs on 25 hits in a 26-3 win, completing the sweep. Hazen had an even better game in the second contest, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, four runs scored, and four RBI.
The Ravens currently stand third in the HCAC standings and will face second place Franklin in a single game Tuesday. The Ravens close out the week with a three-game series at Defiance Friday and Saturday.
In other HCAC action...
No. 18 ranked Rose-Hulman took care of business and earned a sweep over Mount St. Joseph in Terre Haute this weekend. The Engineers (20-6, 8-3 HCAC) moved back to the top of the HCAC standings with the three victories. Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the Rose offense in Friday's 5-4 extra inning win, finishing 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. RHIT held on for another one run win Saturday, posting a 6-5 win in game one. Tepe finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBI. The Engineer bats overpowered the Lions pitching in the second contest as Rose pulled out a 14-5 win to complete the sweep. Kyle Kovach (Munster, Ind./Andrean) blasted a home run in the win and finished 3-for-4 with four runs and four RBI. Rose will play host to Hanover this weekend, while Mount (12-12, 3-4 HCAC) faces Hanover in a single contest Tuesday.
Franklin College posted a series win over Manchester this weekend, taking two of three against the visiting Spartans. The Grizzlies (15-7, 5-2 HCAC) are right behind first place Rose-Hulman in the league standings after posting a 3-1 league mark last week. The blue and gold rallied from five runs down in the seventh inning to pull out a 9-8 13 inning win over Manchester on Friday evening. Senior Paul Strack (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) delivered the game-winning hit in the 13th frame on a two-strike, two-out pitch, finishing the game with two hits, two runs, and two RBI. FC road Friday night's momentum into a 12-4 game one win on Saturday. Matt Zmich (Westfield, Ind./H.S.) blasted a three-run home run in an eight run third inning for the Grizzlies. Manchester (11-13, 3-4 HCAC) prevented the sweep with a 13-8 win in game two. Ty Foster (Danville, Ind./H.S.) led five Spartans with two RBI's, finishing the contest 4-for-5 and three runs scored. Franklin will play host to Anderson tomorrow afternoon before traveling to Lexington to face Transylvania this weekend. Manchester will look to move back up the standings this week as the Spartans face Bluffton and Mount St. Joseph.
Transylvania and Bluffton met in northern Ohio as the Pioneers took two of three from the host Beavers. Bluffton (10-16, 1-9 HCAC) earned an 11-7 win on Friday for their first conference win of the season. Brennan Bauman (Milford, Ohio/H.S.) hit a pair of home runs in the win, leading the Beavers with three hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Transy's offense exploded in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Beavers, pounding out 31 runs in the two wins. The Pioneers (16-10, 6-6 HCAC) took game one 19-10 on 20 hits as Evan Rhea (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) hit a grand slam for TU. The offense continued into the second contest as Transy defeated BU 12-6. Rhea and Thomas Tolliver (Wurtland, Ky./Raceland) each drove in three runs for the Pioneers in the victory. Transylvania will play host to Franklin this weekend, while Bluffton heads to Manchester tomorrow in their only game of the week.
