Baseball Report (Week 7) - No. 18 RHIT Sweeps Hanover for Seventh Straight Win
GREENWOOD, IN- Rose-Hulman remained at the top of the HCAC standings following a three-game sweep of Hanover this weekend. The No. 18 ranked Engineers (23-6, 11-3 HCAC) have won seven straight and hold a slight lead over Franklin and Anderson in the race for a conference championship.
Rose-Hulman senior first baseman Troy Eveslage (Ramsey, Ind./North Harrison) led the Engineer offense in the win over the Panthers. The senior finished the series 6-for-9 at the plate with seven runs scored, six RBI, and a .778 slugging percentage. Eveslage tied a school record with five runs scored in Saturday night’s 20-1 win over the Panthers.
Senior Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill./H.S.) tossed seven shutout innings in Saturday's win over Hanover, allowing no runs and two hits with nine strikeouts.
Sunday's doubleheader saw RHIT defeat Hanover 13-2 and 6-0. In Rose's 13-2 win, Chandler Kent (Antioch, Ill./H.S.) finished 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Senior Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) also went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and five RBI.
The sweep was capped off by a 6-0 win Sunday evening. Kent added two more hits, including a triple and a RBI in the win.
The Engineers currently lead the HCAC standings and will face third place Anderson in a single game Tuesday. Rose-Hulman closes out the week with a three-game series at Manchester Saturday and Sunday.
In other HCAC action...
Franklin remained on the heels of Rose-Hulman after a series win at Transylvania this weekend. The Grizzlies (18-8, 8-3 HCAC) sit three games behind the first place Engineers in the win column heading into this week's action. FC and TU split their two contests on Saturday with the Pioneers (17-13, 7-8 HCAC) taking game one 7-6 and the Grizzlies earning a 6-5 win in game two. The blue and gold handed Transy a 10-6 defeat on Sunday to take the series. Franklin third baseman Alex Boone (Carmel, Ind./H.S.) was 7-for-14 with a double, one run scored, and five RBI in the series against Transy. Junior outfielder Thomas Tolliver (Wurtland, Ky./Raceland) led TU at the plate, hitting .615 with a triple, two stolen bases, six runs scored, and a RBI. Franklin will play host to Mount St. Joseph this weekend, while Transy travels north to Defiance.
Anderson stayed within one game of first place Rose-Hulman, sweeping Defiance in a three-game series. The Ravens (19-11, 10-4 HCAC) offense exploded for the second straight weekend, scoring 57 runs and pounding out 65 hits against the Jackets (12-14, 4-7 HCAC) pitching staff. The Ravens posted a 24-9 win Friday night and defeated DC 17-5 and 16-5 on Saturday. Cody Young (Muncie, Ind./Delta) had a record setting weekend for the Ravens, setting three school records in Friday's 24-9 win. Young had six hits, 14 total bases, and six runs scored as he hit for the cycle with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and a single in the win. In the Defiance series, the senior outfielder was 12-for-18 with 11 runs scored, three doubles, a triple, three home runs, nine RBI, two stolen bases, and a 1.182 slugging percentage. Anderson faces first place Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute tomorrow in their only league game of the week. Defiance faces Manchester in Fort Wayne, Indiana tonight and will host Transylvania this weekend.
Manchester and Mount St. Joseph met in Cincinnati in the final three-game series of the weekend. The Spartans (14-14, 6-5 HCAC) pulled out the series win, taking two of three from the host Lions (14-14, 5-6 HCAC) and currently occupy the fourth and final spot in the race for a conference tournament berth. Manchester's Josh Atkinson (Portland, Ind./Jay Co.) threw a shutout in a 6-0 win on Saturday, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. John Smolinski (South Bend, Ind./St. Josephs) was 11-for-12 at the plate against the Lions with four doubles, three runs scored, seven RBI, and a stolen base. Manchester faces Defiance and Rose-Hulman this week, while the Mount heads to Franklin for three games this weekend.
