Baseball Report (Week 5) - Mount Opens HCAC Season with Sweep of Bluffton

GREENWOOD, IN- The College of Mount St. Joseph got off to a solid start to begin the 2010 conference schedule, sweeping Bluffton in Cincinnati.  The Lions (12-8, 3-0 HCAC) defeated the Beavers 4-3 on Thursday night before sweeping Bluffton (7-14, 0-7 HCAC) 7-0, 4-2 on Friday.

Mount St. Joseph sophomore shortstop Josh Denny (Huntsville, Ala./Flushing) went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Lions offense in Thursday's 4-3 win.

In Saturday's 7-0 game one win, senior Mark Lakas (Westerville, Ohio/Mason) hit 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the MSJ offense.

Sophomore pitcher Drew Ernst (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) ran his record to 3-2 on the season by recording a complete game shutout in the win. Ernst allowed just four hits and a walk, while striking out five Bluffton batters.

Bluffton's offense was led by sophomore third baseman Tyler Stephenson (Springfield, Ohio/Northwestern).  Stephenson hit 3-11 with a home run and a RBI in the series.

Mount St. Joseph continues conference play this week.  The Lions play a single game at home against Transylvania tomorrow before heading to Terre Haute for a three-game set with Rose-Hulman Friday and Saturday.

In other HCAC action...

Manchester took two of three from Anderson in the Spartans first conference series of the season.  The black and gold (10-10, 2-1 HCAC) received a solid series from David Tatham (Nashville, Ind./Brown Co.).  The junior outfielder finished the three-game series against Anderson 6-for-14 with seven runs scored, 10 RBI, and two home runs.  In Friday's 18-13 Manchester win, Manchester and Anderson each hit seven homeruns in the contest with the Spartans connecting on five homers in the third as part of their 10-run inning.  Anderson (11-9, 4-3 HCAC) prevented the sweep with a 5-4 win on Saturday.  Junior Garrett Stone (Ft. Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) hit 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the Ravens win.  Manchester travels to Defiance and Franklin this week, while Anderson welcomes Hanover to town for a three-game series this weekend.

Franklin took two of three against Defiance in the Grizzlies' HCAC opening series.  The Grizzlies (12-6, 2-1 HCAC) opened the series with a sweep on Friday.  In a 16-4 game one win, Alex Boone (Carmel, Ind./H.S.) was 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI.  Boone added another home run and three more RBI in FC's 14-9 win in game two.  Ian Sanders (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) blasted two home runs, scored four times, and drove in four runs for the Grizzlies in the game two win.  Franklin saw their five game win streak come to a close on Saturday as the Jackets (9-10, 3-4 HCAC) walked away with a 6-4 win.  Senior Tim Pitro (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the DC win.  Franklin entertains Rose-Hulman tomorrow night before playing host to Manchester this weekend.  Defiance will play in front of the home fans for the first time this season tomorrow night against Manchester.

In the fourth and final conference series of the weekend, Rose-Hulman posted a series win over Transylvania with two wins. The No. 12 ranked Engineers (16-5, 5-2 HCAC) opened the weekend with a pair of wins over the Pioneers (13-9, 3-5 HCAC) before suffering a loss in the third and final contest down in Lexington.  Tim Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) scored three runs and added three RBI in a 15-10 Engineer win on Friday.  Kreigh Williams (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) hit a double and drove in five runs during RHIT's 9-7 win Saturday.  Transylvania prevented the sweep with a 7-6 come-from-behind win in game two Saturday.  The Pioneers scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game on a Phil Blakely (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) RBI single.  Blakely finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.  Rose travels to Franklin tomorrow evening before facing Mount St. Joseph in Terre Haute this weekend.  Transy hits the road to face MSJ tomorrow and Bluffton this weekend.
