Anderson Set to Host HCAC Baseball Tournament

ANDERSON, IN – Anderson University claimed its first regular season HCAC baseball title since 2000 and third overall, earning the right to host the 2010 HCAC Baseball Tournament.  The tournament will be held at Don Brandon Field on the campus of Anderson University.

The Ravens, coached by Don Brandon in his final season, earned the No. 1 seed with a 26-14 record overall and a 17-5 mark in league play.  Franklin and Manchester finished second with a 15-7 record in HCAC action.  The Grizzlies posted an overall record of 25-13, while the Spartans earned a 23-17 mark.  Rose-Hulman (26-11, 14-8 HCAC) finished fourth in the league standings and rounds out the four-team field.

Anderson, Franklin, and Rose-Hulman each participated in last year’s tournament field in Franklin as the Engineers defeated the host Grizzlies 17-10 in the championship contest.  Rose will try for back-to-back tournament titles under the direction of Jeff Jenkins and spent most of the season ranked in the national polls.

Top-seeded Anderson opens play at 12:00 PM against Rose-Hulman Thursday.  Franklin and Manchester will tangle in the second game of the afternoon at 3:30 PM. 

The Ravens closed out the HCAC schedule with seven straight wins to earn the title outright.  Manchester finished the schedule with a 10-3 mark to earn a bid into the tournament field.

Franklin went 4-4 down the stretch to fall into the second seed, while Rose-Hulman lost five of seven heading into the HCAC Tournament to earn the fourth seed.

Three games will be played Friday, beginning at 9:30 AM, and the championship game in the double-elimination event is set for Saturday at noon.  An automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship will be awarded to the winner of the championship.
