Baseball Report (Week 9) - Manchester Secures Final Bid into HCAC Field
GREENWOOD, IN- Manchester College secured a spot in the upcoming HCAC Tournament with a series win over Transylvania (23-15, 12-10 HCAC) this weekend. The Spartans (20-16, 12-7 HCAC) have won seven of their last nine games and stand a game and a half back of first place Franklin in the standings heading into the final week of play.
Manchester first baseman Ty Foster (Danville, Ind./H.S.) was 5-for-11 (.455) at the plate against the Pioneers. The junior hit one double, three home runs, scored six runs, and added seven RBI. Foster also set a new HCAC single season record with his 10th home run in conference play this season.
In Saturday's 10-7 game one win over Transy, Foster was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. He added a three-run home run in the fourth inning of a 13-6 win in the second contest.
Foster clubbed a home run for the third time in the three game series in Sunday's 9-8 loss. Freshman Brad Murphy (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) also went deep in the loss, finishing 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Manchester will close the regular season schedule this Friday and Saturday at Hanover.
In other HCAC action...
Anderson remained even in the standings with Franklin after sweeping Bluffton this weekend. The Ravens (22-14, 13-5 HCAC) and Grizzlies (22-10, 12-4 HCAC) sit even in games back, while the Grizzlies hold a slight percentage advantage. Anderson’s Chris Jarrett (Hagerstown, Ind./H.S.) provided the bulk of the Ravens offense in the sweep of the Beavers. The senior outfielder finished the series 9-for-14 (.643) at the plate with six runs scored, a double, a triple, two home runs, and eight RBI. Anderson will showdown with Franklin tomorrow afternoon before closing the regular season schedule against Mount St. Joseph this weekend. Bluffton (15-21, 5-13 HCAC) travels to rival Defiance tomorrow and welcomes first place Franklin this weekend.
Mount St. Joseph took two of three against Defiance this past weekend. The Lions (17-19, 7-11 HCAC) ended a four game losing streak with the series opening win Friday. John Pasquale (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) went 2-for-6 with a home run and five RBI in the 9-8 win Friday. In Saturday's 11-1 game one win, Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) finished 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Defiance (14-21, 5-13 HCAC) earned an 8-7 win to close out the series on Saturday. Zach Stallkamp (Paulding, Ohio/H.S.) led the offense in the win, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Mount plays their final game at home tomorrow against Hanover before heading to Anderson this weekend. Defiance will play host to Bluffton and Rose-Hulman to close out the season.
