GREENWOOD, IN- Rose-Hulman kicked off the HCAC schedule with a three-game sweep of Defiance over the weekend. The Engineers (12-4, 3-0 HCAC) received solid pitching performances in all three contests, allowing no more than two runs in a single game.
The series kicked off Saturday as Rose earned 3-1 and 4-2 wins at Defiance (6-9, 0-3 HCAC).
In game one, sophomore infielder Andrew Benitez (Mililini, Hawaii/H.S.) drove in two runs in the third inning to hold off the host Jackets. Senior Jim Bob Schuler (Salem, Ind./N. Harrison) was dominant on the mound, allowing three hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
In game two, junior Donald Stopka (Graylake, Ill./Carmel Catholic) blasted a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to deliver the 4-2 win over DC.
Rose-Hulman was able to complete the weekend sweep with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers were held to only three hits, with Benitez driving in the team's only RBI on a ground out to third base in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Hank Akard (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) pitched a complete game for the Engineers in the win, allowing five hits and no earned runs in nine innings of work.
Rose-Hulman will welcome Bluffton to Terre Haute over the weekend for a three game league series on Friday and Saturday.
