GREENWOOD, IN- The race for the HCAC tournament is heating up as the conference schedule heads to the final week. Transylvania University moved into the fourth and final spot in the standings thanks to a 4-0 mark last week. The Pioneers (20-16, 13-9 HCAC) have won five in a row and control their own destiny against Manchester this weekend.
Transy began the week's schedule with a 15-7 win over Mount St. Joseph in Lexington. The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
TU received a much needed sweep of Earlham over the weekend. Transy earned a 5-0 win Friday and closed the series with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Sophomore outfielder Zach Bynum (Louisville, Ky./Male) led the offense during the week, finishing the 12-for-17 (.706) at the plate with seven runs scored, two doubles, one RBI, and two stolen bases.
Bynum had an on-base percentage of .737 and produced a .824 slugging percentage against the Lions and Quakers.
On the mound, Taylor Bugh (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) pitched a complete game shutout in TU's 5-0 win over Earlham. The senior pitcher tossed nine shutout innings, allowing six hits with eight strikeouts in the win.
Transy currently holds a one game lead over Manchester in the race for the final HCAC tournament spot. The Pioneers and Spartans will battle Saturday and Sunday.
Anderson, Rose-Hulman, and Franklin have locked up three of the four spots in the tournament field. The event will be held at the conference champion on May 10-12.
