Baseball Report (Week 2) - Bluffton Finishes Week 6-2 Down in Florida

GREENWOOD, IN- Bluffton University continued a 10-game trip to Florida with a 6-2 record last week.  The Beavers earned sweeps of Finlandia, Muskingum, and Anna Maria, while suffering losses to Moravian and Heidelberg. 

Bluffton (7-3, 0-0 HCAC) currently ranks second in HCAC in runs scored (69), hits (104), and RBI (59), sitting behind unbeaten Manchester University (8-0, 0-0 HCAC) in each category.

Senior Kyle Niermann (Napoleon, Ohio/H.S.) returned to form last week with 16 hits and a .500 batting average, including going 9-of-13 in the final three games of the trip. Niermann drove in seven runs and scored five with a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base to lead the Beaver offense.

Sophomore pitcher Nate Simonds (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) went 1-1 with a sparkling 2.05 ERA in 13 innings of work last week. Simonds earned his first collegiate win in a 14-6 victory over Finlandia and followed that performance with a nine-inning complete game against Moravian on two days rest. He took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs and nine hits while fanning four batters. Simonds finished the week with 10 strikeouts.

Bluffton returns home to face Wilmington and Oberlin this week.

In other action...

Manchester (8-0, 0-0 HCAC) remained perfect on the season with a sweep of DePauw and wins over Eastern and Catholic in Myrtle Beach.

Sophomore outfielder Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) hammered a two-run homer as part of a seven-RBI afternoon in leading MU to a key regional sweep of DePauw. 

Earlham College's Nate Hube (Lebanon, Ohio/H.S.) fired the second no-hitter in Earlham baseball history Saturday in a 12-0 win over Johnson (TN).  The sophomore did not allow a hit and struck out seven in the five inning win.
