Baseball Report (Week 4) - No. 22 Manchester Opens HCAC Season with Sweep of Franklin

GREENWOOD, IN - Manchester University finished the week with a perfect 4-0 mark.  The No. 22 ranked Spartans (13-2-1, 3-0 HCAC) earned a win over Wabash and a three-game sweep of Franklin to open the league schedule.

Junior infielder Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind./H.S.) finished the week 9-for-16 (.563) at the plate to lead the Manchester offense.  Nieman collected three doubles, seven RBI, and two runs scored, while posting a slugging percentage of .750.

On the mound, senior Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) picked up three saves in three of the Manchester wins. The senior did not surrender a run, issued one walk, struck out six, and scattered six hits in eight innings of work. 

Murphy earned a save in MU's 15-14 win over Wabash and added two more in the series sweep of Franklin. 

Manchester will travel to Lexington for a three-game weekend series with Transylvania Friday and Saturday.

In other HCAC action...

Rose-Hulman (5-9, 2-0 HCAC) opened the conference schedule with a two-game sweep at Mount St. Joseph (4-10, 0-2 HCAC).  Sunday's contest was cancelled due to weather and will not be made up. Junior outfielder Hank Akard (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) finished 4-7 at the plate with five runs scored, one double and one triple in the doubleheader sweep.

Defiance (8-4, 2-1 HCAC) took two out of three against Hanover (8-8, 1-2 HCAC) over the weekend.  The Yellow Jackets pulled out a 3-2 win in 10 innings on Friday and won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader 8-5.  Hanover won game two of the series 11-7.

Transylvania (8-6, 2-1 HCAC) rallied after Friday's 5-4 15-inning loss to Earlham (5-12, 1-2 HCAC) to win the series with a pair of wins Saturday. Junior catcher Sam Liggett (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) finished the week 8-for-18 (.444) at the plate with a home run, seven RBI, and five runs scored.

Anderson (6-8, 2-1 HCAC) kicked off the HCAC schedule with a series win at Bluffton (9-5, 1-2 HCAC) over the weekend.  The Ravens took Friday's contest 6-5 and split Saturday's contest with a 5-2 Bluffton win and a 7-1 AU victory.
