GREENWOOD, IN – Manchester University claimed its fifth regular season baseball title as a member of HCAC, earning the right to host the 2013 HCAC Baseball Tournament. The tournament will be held at James Gratz Field on the campus of Manchester Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The No. 12 ranked Spartans, coached by Rick Espeset, earned the No. 1 seed with a 32-5-1 record overall and a 22-3 mark in league play. Anderson finished second with a 15-10 record in HCAC action and an overall mark of 21-19. Franklin placed third in the league standings, posting a 22-18 overall record and 14-11 tally in league play. Defiance (20-14, 13-11 HCAC) finished fourth in the league standings and rounds out the four team field.
Last year at Rose-Hulman, Manchester defeated Anderson 5-0 in the championship contest.
Top seed Manchester opens play at 12:00 PM against Defiance Thursday. No. 2 seed Anderson will tangle with Franklin in the second game at 3:30 PM.
The Spartans closed out the HCAC schedule with a nine-game win streak to earn the top seed. Manchester finished the conference schedule with a 13-1 mark at home this season. The only loss was a 7-6 decision in 10-innings to Anderson
Anderson went 9-4 down the stretch to earn the second seed, while Franklin won seven of their last nine games heading into the tournament to earn the third seed. Defiance won two of three from Transylvania on the final weekend to edge out the Pioneers for the final spot in the field.
Three games will be played Friday, beginning at 9:30 AM, and the championship game in the double-elimination event is set for Saturday at noon. An automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship will be awarded to the winner of the championship.
Admission to the tournament will be available for $6 per day for adults, with students from HCAC institutions admitted free.
