GREENWOOD, IN - Manchester University took over the top spot in the HCAC standings following a three-game sweep of Rose-Hulman. The Spartans (14-9, 8-2 HCAC) defeated Anderson on Tuesday prior to the three victories over the Engineers (12-7, 7-3 HCAC).
Junior outfielder Justin Miller (Yorktown, Ind.) led the Spartans offense during the week with six hits, five RBIs and a home run.
On the mound, senior relief pitcher Josh Copp (Sharpsville, Ind./Tri-Central) earned a win and a pair of saves during the week. The senior appeared three times in relief, picking up a win at Anderson and a pair of saves against Rose-Hulman. Copp tossed four innings with four strikeouts, no walks, no runs, and allowed only three hits.
Manchester has won seven straight games since dropping a doubleheader at Hanover on March 22. The Spartans will host Defiance on Tuesday afternoon and then travel to Franklin for a three-game series this weekend.
In other HCAC action...
Anderson (14-6, 7-3 HCAC) bounced back from the loss to Manchester to win a three-game series over Franklin (14-10, 5-5 HCAC). The Ravens won a pair of contests on Saturday (3-2 & 12-11) before the Grizzlies avoided a sweep with a 5-2 win Sunday. Junior catcher Cole Heberling (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) led the Ravens at the plate, batting .471 with four runs, two doubles, and four RBI.
Transylvania (13-11, 7-3 HCAC) moved within a game of the league lead following a series sweep of Earlham (11-11, 3-7 HCAC). Sophomore Trey Simpson (Louisville, Ky./Male) led the Pioneers offense, going 12-for-27 (.444) with nine runs, six RBI, and three stolen bases.
Mount St. Joseph (10-11-1, 5-5 HCAC) went 4-0 on the week, beating Earlham on Tuesday and earning a three-game sweep of Defiance (7-15, 1-9 HCAC) over the weekend. The Lions beat Earlham 7-1 and handed Defiance a 7-1 defeat on Friday night. The Mount finished off the perfect week with an 11-5 and 8-3 win on Saturday over the Jackets.
Bluffton (10-12, 3-7 HCAC) earned its first league wins of the season, beating rival Defiance 16-10 before taking two of three from Hanover (8-12, 4-6 HCAC) over the weekend. Freshman Luke Hickey (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) finished the week 11-of-17 (.611) with a home run, a double, seven runs, and seven RBI to lead the Beavers. Hanover's Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind./Edgewood) led the Panthers during the Bluffton series and an 11-8 win at Transylvania. The junior infielder finished 9-of-14 (.643) at the plate with four runs scored, four doubles, a home run, five RBI, and two walks.
