GREENWOOD, IN – Manchester University claimed its sixth regular season baseball title as a member of HCAC, earning the right to host the 2014 HCAC Baseball Tournament for the second-straight year. The tournament will be held at James Gratz Field on the campus of Manchester Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The Spartans, coached by Rick Espeset, earned the No. 1 seed with a 24-15 record overall and an 18-7 mark in league play. Anderson finished second with a 17-8 record in HCAC action and an overall mark of 25-13. Rose-Hulman placed third in the league standings, posting a 23-16 overall record and 16-9 tally in league play. Franklin (24-15, 15-10 HCAC) finished fourth in the HCAC standings and rounds out the four team field.
Last year at Manchester, Manchester defeated Franklin 12-9 in the championship contest.
Top seed Manchester opens play at 12:00 PM against Franklin Thursday. No. 2 seed Anderson will tangle with Rose-Hulman in the second game at 3:30 PM.
The Spartans closed out the HCAC schedule with a 3-3 record to hold on to the No. 1 seed. Manchester finished the conference schedule with an 8-3 mark at home this season.
Anderson went 7-3 down the stretch to earn the second seed, while Rose-Hulman won six of their last ten games heading into the tournament to earn the third seed. Franklin won two of three from Bluffton on the final weekend to edge out the Beavers for the final spot in the field.
Three games will be played Friday, beginning at 9:30 AM, and the championship game in the double-elimination event is set for Saturday at noon. An automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship will be awarded to the winner of the championship.
Admission to the tournament will be available for $6 per day for adults, with students from HCAC institutions admitted free.
