FRANKLIN, IN - Franklin College (3-1, 1-0 HCAC) opened conference play with a convincing 41-14 home win over Defiance College (1-3, 0-1 HCAC). The No. 23 ranked Grizzlies jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter and never looked back as the blue and gold have won two straight since their loss to Butler.
FC racked up 441 yards of total offense against the Jackets' defense, including 348 via the passing game. Quarterback Nick Purichia (Indianapolis, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) completed 15 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns, while Kyle Ray (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek) added eight completions for 88 yards and two scores.
Wide receiver Adam Mellencamp (Freetown, Ind./Brownstown Central) caught a team-high five passes for 94 yards and a score. Mitch Deffner (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) caught the first and last touchdowns for the Grizzlies on the afternoon, finishing with 75 yards and two scores.
Defiance's two touchdowns were both scored by running back Drew Kuesel (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry). The sophomore scored on a pair of one yard runs and finished the game with 37 yards on 16 carries. Receiver Nick Wiedenhoft (Marblehead, Ohio/Danbury) added 130 yards receiving on 11 catches in the loss.
Franklin will head to Bluffton Saturday afternoon as the Jackets return home to face Manchester.
