Franklin’s Ray and Defiance’s Longsdorf Headline All-HCAC Football Selections
GREENWOOD, IN – Franklin College placed ten players on the 2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team, including the conference’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year. Franklin’s Kyle Ray (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek) has been named the HCAC Offensive Most Valuable Player for the first time, while Zack Corpe (Granger, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) picked up the Freshman of the Year award. Grizzlies’ head coach Mike Leonard garnered Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in his career.
Defiance’s Kyle Longsdorf (London, Ohio/H.S.) was honored as Defensive Most Valuable Player for 2010, while his teammate Tom Foos (Helena, Ohio/Lakota) was selected as Special Teams Most Valuable Player this fall. The Jackets placed nine players on the All-HCAC First Team.
Ray, a senior quarterback for the Grizzlies, threw for 2,731 yards this season to help his team win an outright HCAC title for the third time in four years and earn a bid to the NCAA playoffs. The senior completed 73.8% (197-267) of his passes for a national-best 194.8 passing efficiency. Ray averaged a league-best 273.1 passing yards per game and tossed 32 touchdowns to pilot the conference’s top offensive attack. The Trafalgar, Indiana native crossed the 300 yard mark passing four times during the season, including a 361 yard effort against rival Hanover to win the HCAC title.
Longsdorf, a senior defensive back for Defiance, led the Jackets to a second place finish in the HCAC this season. The senior led the conference and ranked fourth nationally with 139 tackles, and added four interceptions (5th HCAC), 7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks (9th HCAC), and one blocked kick. Longsdorf returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns this season, including a 100 yard return against Earlham. As a team, Defiance ranked second in the conference in team defense (291.7 ypg) and scoring defense (18.1 ppg).
Foos, a senior kicker and punter for Defiance, scored 47 points for the Yellow Jackets this season. The senior converted 8-of-11 field goals and 23-of-27 extra points this fall, averaging 4.7 points per game. Foos booted 56 punts for 38.2 yards per punt (33rd NCAA) and placed 19 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.
Corpe, a freshman defensive back and kick returner for Franklin, played in all 10 games for the Grizzlies this season. The freshman made 40 tackles and added eight interceptions (7th NCAA), a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery this fall. Corpe returned three of his interceptions for touchdowns this season, including two against Anderson. The freshman averaged 8.9 yards per punt return and 26.5 yards per kickoff return, including an 80 yard touchdown vs. Manchester.
Franklin head coach Mike Leonard has been selected as the HCAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. He guided the Grizzlies to their third conference title and a 9-1 overall record. The Grizzlies finished alone in first place in the HCAC with a perfect 8-0 mark. The only loss this season for FC was a 30-27 defeat to Carthage in the first game of the season. Franklin opens the NCAA Playoffs Saturday at defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater.
