FRANKLIN, IN - The Franklin College (1-1, 0-0 HCAC) football team won their first home game on the new Elba L. and Gene Portteus Branigin Athletic Field, routing Valparaiso 42-7 before a capacity crowd at Faught Stadium Saturday.
The Grizzlies evened their record at 1-1 with the win over Valpo, an affiliate of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.
Senior quarterback Kyle Ray (Trafalgar, Ind./Indian Creek) tossed four touchdowns and rushed for another, finishing 27 of 35 for a career-high 382 yards.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 28-7 lead at halftime and added a pair of touchdowns in the second half to complete the scoring. The blue and gold finished the day with 568 total yards, including 399 through the air.
Junior running back Reece Craig (Bedford, Ind./Bedford North Lawrence) led the way on the ground with 73 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Senior Matt Zmich (Westfield, Ind./Washington) caught six passes for a game-high 131 yards, while Mitch Deffner (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) added six catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior defensive back Luke Hurst (Miamisburg, Ohio/Northmont) led the FC defense with 7 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, and one fumble recovery.
Franklin will welcome Bluffton to campus Saturday afternoon for a HCAC clash. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM.
