HANOVER, IN - Defiance College (1-2, 1-0 HCAC) earned its first victory of the season with a 24-10 win at Hanover College (1-2, 0-1 HCAC) Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets pulled away with 14 points in the fourth quarter, breaking a 10-10 tie heading into the final quarter of play.
DC slashed the Hanover defense with their running game, accounting for 238 yards on the ground. Quarterback Rick Powell (Rochester, Mich./Cousino) was tremendous in the win, rushing for 195 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
The junior also completed 17 of his 24 passes for 114 yards with one interception, earning the conference's Player of the Week award on offense.
Powell began and ended the scoring for Defiance on the day, scoring on a 71 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter and adding a 17 yard scamper midway through the fourth quarter.
The Hanover offense managed the bulk of its offense via the passing attack in the loss. Junior quarterback C.J. Croft (Fort Campbell, Ky./H.S.) completed 18 of his 31 passes for 185 yards and added 70 yards and a touchdown on the ground to lead the Hanover attack.
On the defensive side of the football for Defiance, senior defensive back Kyle Longsdorf (London, Ohio/H.S.) led the way with 15 tackles, while freshman Pat McDonald (Warren, Mich./Cousino) added 12 tackles with four tackles for loss yardage.
Defiance senior kicker Tom Foos (Helena, Ohio/Lakota) set a Defiance single-game record with a 70-yard punt, while also hitting a 37-yard field goal and all three extra points. Foos was named HCAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance.
The Yellow Jackets will play in front of the home crowd for the first time this season Saturday as Franklin heads north for a HCAC clash. Hanover will remain home to face Rose-Hulman.
