TERRE HAUTE, IN - Defiance College (4-4, 4-2 HCAC) won its fourth consecutive HCAC contest as the Jackets handed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (3-5, 3-3 HCAC) a narrow 21-18 defeat Saturday. The Jackets stand third in the HCAC standings behind Franklin and Hanover.
Defiance held Rose-Hulman to zero yards rushing, while racking up 254 yards and a trio of touchdowns on the ground.
The host Engineers held a slight 10-7 advantage at the break thanks to a 28-yard field goal from Nick Schneider (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) as time expired.
Defiance stretched the lead to 21-10 in the fourth quarter after a pair of touchdown runs by Drew Kuesel (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry). Kuesel finished the afternoon with 95 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.
Rose managed to cut the deficit to 21-18 with just under six minutes to play. The Engineers steadily moved the ball to Defiance's 29-yard line on their last possession and attempted a potential game-tying 47-yard field goal, but saw the ball sail wide right to seal the 21-18 Defiance win.
The lopsided rushing numbers also allowed Defiance to dominate the clock by a 40:15 to 19:45 gap over the Engineers.
DC has now rushed for at least 250 yards in two of its last three showings, while holding the opposition to an average of 36 yards on the ground.
Defiance's Rick Powell (Rochester, Mich./Cousino) led the attack with 120 rushing yards on 23 tries, while also completing 11 passes for 124 yards.
The Jackets will look for a fifth-straight win as DC returns home to face Manchester Saturday.
Rose-Hulman has dropped its past two contests and will look to change the fortune on the road against Anderson.
