FRANKLIN, IN - Franklin College (4-1, 3-0 HCAC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but had to hold off a rally by the College of Mount St. Joseph (3-1, 2-1 HCAC) in a 35-23 victory at Faught Stadium Saturday.
The annual Franklin and Mount St. Joseph clash has been a pivotal one in the HCAC race for the previous seven years with the winner going on to claim the outright HCAC title.
The Grizzlies prevailed despite committing four turnovers and being out-gained in total offensive yards 432 to 288.
FC sophomore quarterback Jonny West (Avon, Ind./Speedway) completed 23 of his 38 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior wingback Logan Worley (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) had seven catches for 78 yards and two scores to lead all FC receivers.
The FC running game was held in check by the Lions defense, managing only 12 net yards on the day.
For Mount St. Joseph, junior quarterback Brian Pitzer (South Salem, Ohio/McClain) completed 17 of his 36 passes for 211 yards, three scores, and three interceptions. Pitzer also was the Lions' leading ground gainer, rushing for 93 net yards on 20 carries.
Franklin College entered the D3football.com Top 25 poll after the win and stands No. 25 in the nation.
The Grizzlies head to conference unbeaten Rose-Hulman Saturday, while Mount returns to Cincinnati to face Defiance.
