N. MANCHESTER, IN - Manchester College (1-1, 0-0 HCAC) was the lone HCAC school to find the win column Saturday as the Spartans delivered Kalamazoo a 26-17 defeat.
Manchester kicker Kyle Evans (Winamac, Ind./West Central) connected on field goals of 44 and 41 yards to give Manchester a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
Sophomore receiver Kurt Monix (Crown Point, Ind./Lowell) scored on a 26 yard touchdown pass from Justin Minnich (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) in the second quarter. Monix scored again in the third period on an eight yard touchdown grab, finishing with 83 yards and two touchdowns on six grabs.
Evans' foot came through for the black and gold again as he hit a 42-yard field goal with 57 seconds left in the third and another with 11:03 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Manchester all the points they would need.
Running back Corey Nelson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) led Manchester with 100 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Minnich finished the contest completing 17 of his 28 passes for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Defensively for MC, Brecken Kennedy (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester) led the unit with 17 tackles and one pass break-up.
Manchester will look to open the HCAC schedule with a win as the Spartans travel to Earlham for a 1:30 PM kickoff Saturday.
