CINCINNATI, OH - Mount St. Joseph (3-0, 2-0 HCAC) fell behind early but managed to defeat visiting Bluffton University (0-4,0-2 HCAC) 28-17 in Cincinnati Saturday. The Lions remain the only unbeaten squad in the HCAC this season.
Junior James Clay (Louisville, Ky./Manual Dupont) ran for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, and the Lions' offense rolled up 452 yards of total offense.
Bluffton jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, only to see the Lions score the game's next 28 points.
BU sophomore quarterback Tyler Wright (Troy, Ohio/H.S.) scored on a 15-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to give the Beavers an early 10-0 advantage. Wright finished the game with 97 yards through the air and 46 yards on the ground.
Clay got the Mount scoring started in the second quarter when he raced in form 29 yards out and Zachary Gerber (Payne, Ohio/Wayne Trace) helped give the Lions the lead when he scored on a touchdown pass from Brian Pitzer (South Salem, Ohio/McClain) late in the second quarter.
Clay added TD runs in the third and fourth quarter to finish his effort against the Beavers defense.
Pitzer finished the contest 15-of-24 with 167 yards and a score, while rushing for 88 yards.
Konnor Blevins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) led the Lions defense, who held the Beavers to 322 yards of total offense, with 11 tackles, including two for loss yards, and an interception.
Mount has a showdown with fellow HCAC unbeaten Franklin at Faught Stadium Saturday afternoon. Bluffton returns home to face Earlham as both squads look for their first win of the season.
