Franklin's Burton, RHIT's Riley & Manchester's Nelson Headline All-HCAC Football Selections

GREENWOOD, Ind. --- Franklin College's Chase Burton (Corydon, Ind. / Corydon Central) has been named the HCAC Offensive Most Valuable Player for the third year in a row, while Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Mike Riley (Naperville, Ill. / St. Francis) picked up the HCAC Defensive Most Valuable Player award.

Manchester University's Dakota Nelson (Fairland, Ind. / Triton Central) was honored as Special Teams Most Valuable Player for the second time, while Franklin's head coach Mike Leonard garnered Coach of the Year honors for the seventh time in his career. Hanover College's Kyle Treber (Mishawaka, Ind. / Penn) was named Freshman of the Year for his efforts this fall.

Burton, a senior quarterback for the Grizzlies, has passed for 3,636 yards this fall, ranking second in all of NCAA Division III.  The senior is averaging 363.6 yards per game, while amassing 42 passing touchdowns, ranking first in all of NCAA Division III. The senior led a Grizzly passing offense that ranks first in all of DIII with 419.8 yards per game. During conference play, Burton averaged 374.0 passing yards per contest and tossed 34 touchdowns. The third-year starter crossed the 300-yard passing mark eight times in ten games, including a 467-yard performance against Rose-Hulman. 

Riley, a junior defensive lineman for Rose-Hulman, led the Fightin' Engineers defense this season that ranked first in the conference in sacks (42).  The junior tallied 53 total tackles, 34 solo tackles, and 17 sacks this season. The junior's 17 sacks ranks first across all divisions in the NCAA for the 2017 campaign. Riley also has 20 tackles for loss for a total of 105 yards and one forced fumble from the defensive end position.

Nelson, a senior wide receiver for Manchester, led the Spartans special teams unit in ten games this fall. The senior landed seventh on the NCAA Division III leaderboard with 31 kickoff returns (887 yards) for an average of 28.6 yards per return this fall. Nelson also contributed two touchdowns on kickoff returns and 16 punt returns (7.4 yards/return) for Manchester during his senior season.

Treber, a freshman linebacker for Hanover, played in nine games for the Panthers this season. The freshman led the conference with 98 total tackles and averaged 10.9 tackles per games. Treber led a defense this fall that allowed 377.5 yards per game ranking second in the conference. The Panthers defense also fell in the top five of the conference leaderboard with 72.0 tackles per game and racked up 24 total sacks this season.

Franklin College's head football coach Mike Leonard has been named the HCAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career as the head coach for the Grizzlies. Leonard led Franklin to an 8-2 record this fall and their tenth regular season HCAC title.  Leonard also led the Grizzlies to their ninth appearance in 11 years in the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs.

All teams are voted and selected by the nine conference head coaches.
