INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The 2018 football season got underway last week with all nine Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference institutions participating in their non-conference schedules.
Manchester University kicked off the season last Thursday when the Spartans traveled to Trine University. Manchester was led by Donovan Henderson Jr. in the 55-7 loss. The junior rushed for 90 yards on 21 attempts.
Franklin hosted Benedictine (Ill.) last weekend and gained a 55-38 victory in the matchup. The Grizzlies were led on offense by quarterback Braden Smith and wide receiver Brad Bonomini. Smith threw 26-35 for 348 yards with four touchdowns, while Bonomini averaged 19.3 yards per reception with three touchdowns.
Mount St. Joseph defeated Capital 59-21 last Saturday to open the Lions season. The Mount's defense tallied 70 total tackles to Capital's 47 in the matchup. The Lions receiving line contributed seven touchdowns from four different players. Mount St. Joseph's Colby Newman averaged 12.2 yards per carry and tallied two touchdowns in the win.
