INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football teams remain undefeated after the fifth week of conference action.
The Franklin College Grizzlies claimed a 42-34 win on the road at Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. The Grizzlies defensive effort was led by senior Austin Fleming. The linebacker tallied a career-high 14 tackles, eight solo, and recorded his first interception in the win. Late in the second quarter, Fleming forced a big turnover during Mount St. Joseph's drive, salvaging a lead for the Grizzlies. Franklin quarterback Braden Smith connected 19 out of 27 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Hanover College picked up a 48-7 victory at home against Defiance on Saturday. The Panthers tallied 451 total offensive yards compared to the Yellow Jackets 218. Hanover's offensive attack was led by sophomore Shawn Coane. The running back posted a season-high 192 all-purpose yards including 148 rushing yards on 16 carries. Coane added 44 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the win for the Panthers.
The Manchester Spartans traveled to Bluffton and claimed a 21-17 win on the road over the weekend. Defensive back Dillon Nelson put on a performance for the Spartans with three interceptions, two being returned for touchdowns in the victory. The senior also added four total tackles for the Manchester defense.
Anderson University picked up its second victory of the season on Saturday with a 63-0 win over Earlham. Quarterback Alex Laccabue threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Reggie Lipscomb rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns in the contest.
