Defiance's Sales and Anderson Head Coach Tom Slyder Named D3hoops All-Region
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Anderson University head coach Tom Slyder and Defiance College senior forward Nick Sales (Barberton, Ohio/H.S.) earned postseason recognition, garnering a spot on the 2010 D3hoops.com All-Region teams.
The website announced the recipients this afternoon with both Slyder and Sales appearing on the All-Midwest region team. Slyder was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year, while Sales earned a spot on the All-Midwest region second-team. The pair were the only Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference representatives on the All-Region squads.
Slyder led the Ravens to their first HCAC men's basketball title and the school's first outright men's basketball title in 49 years, earning the conference's Coach of the Year award. Anderson finished the season 23-6 after making the school's first ever appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. Slyder led the Ravens to a 73-71 win over St. Thomas (Minn.) in the first round before falling to host Carthage 76-58 in round two.
Sales helped Defiance reach the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in school history with a 70-65 win over Anderson in the HCAC tournament championship game. The senior earned the HCAC Most Valuable Player award after ranking second among the conference leaders in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (8.4 rpg), and field goal percentage (58.9%) during conference play this season. Sales was also named the conference tournament MVP after leading the Jackets to the title.
