Defiances Sales Headlines All-HCAC Basketball Selections
GREENWOOD, IN - Defiance College's Nick Sales (Barberton, Ohio/H.S.) has been named the 2009-2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player and headlines the 12-member All-HCAC team. The senior forward led the Yellow Jackets to their second HCAC men's basketball tournament title and hold a 23-5 overall record heading into the NCAA tournament.
Sales ranked second among the conference leaders in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (8.4 rpg), and field goal percentage (58.9%) during conference play this season. Overall for the season, Sales ranked in the top three in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounding (7.9 rpg), field goal percentage (57.0%), and steals (2.11 pg). Defiance compiled an 11-5 conference mark, finishing third in the regular season standings. DC will tangle with Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the College of Wooster Friday night.
Transylvania's Barrett Meyer (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin Co.) has also received special recognition by the conference. The freshman guard has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. Meyer led the Pioneers in scoring during conference play, averaging 12.5 points per game. He finished first in the HCAC in three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made, connecting 48 times for a 49.5% clip behind the arc.
Anderson University head coach Tom Slyder has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the first time. Slyder led the Ravens to their first HCAC men's basketball title and the school's first outright men's basketball title in 49 years. Anderson has compiled a 22-5 overall record this season and will face St. Thomas (Minn.) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Carthage College (Wis.) this Friday evening.
Sales is one of 12 players named to the All-HCAC team. There are five seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores on the team this season. The 25-member Honorable Mention All-HCAC team has also been named. A complete list of the recipients of conference awards follow:
