Men's Basketball Report (Week 9) - Transy Stands Alone Atop the HCAC Standings
GREENWOOD, IN - Transylvania University (13-2, 7-1 HCAC) took over sole possession of first place in the HCAC standings with wins over Hanover and Rose-Hulman this week. The Pioneers entered the week tied with the Panthers and Engineers at the top of the league standings.
In Transy's 72-67 win over Hanover, Ethan Spurlin (Stanford, Ky./Lincoln Co.) scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds, connecting on 12 of his 18 field goal attempts.
The junior forward followed that performance with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks in a 60-46 home win over Rose-Hulman Saturday.
The Pioneers have yet to lose in Lexington, posting a perfect 9-0 mark at the Beck Center.
Transy will hit the road for a pair of league games this week. TU will travel to Cincinnati to face Mount St. Joseph Wednesday evening before heading to Anderson Saturday.
In other action...
Rose-Hulman (12-3, 6-2 HCAC) earned a road split last week to fall out of first place. The Engineers squeaked out a narrow 71-70 win at Anderson Wednesday prior to falling at Transylvania Saturday.
Sophomore Julian Strickland (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) scored a career-high 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting in the win over Anderson. Strickland added 15 points and three boards in the loss to Transy.
Rose will look to bounce back at home against Franklin Wednesday evening.
Hanover (10-4, 6-2 HCAC) rebounded after Wednesday's loss to Transy with an impressive 90-61 win over Earlham Saturday.
Senior center Mike Case (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) led four Panthers in double figures against the Quakers with 21 points on 10 of 15 shooting.
Franklin (9-6, 6-2 HCAC) moved into second place in the HCAC standings with a pair of wins during the week. The Grizzlies were impressive at home earning a 74-69 win over Mount St. Joseph and a 63-47 triumph over Manchester.
Sophomore guard Bailey Howard (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) scored a career-high 26 points on 8 of 13 shooting and grabbed two rebounds in Franklin's 63-47 victory over Manchester.
Howard scored 18 points with three rebounds and one assist in the Grizzlies' 74-69 win over Mount St. Joseph at home on Wednesday.
