Men's Basketball Report (Week 7) - Defiance Earns Purple & Gold Tourney Crown
GREENWOOD, IN - Defiance College (4-7, 0-4 HCAC) ended a five game skid over the holiday break, claiming the title at the DC Purple and Gold Financial Tournament. The Jackets opened with an 81-77 win over Knox and capped off the effort with a narrow 88-87 win over Lakeland to win the championship.
Junior guard Logan Wolfrum (Defiance, Ohio/Ayersville) led the Yellow Jackets, averaging 25.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Wolfrum poured in a game-high 26 points against Knox and added 24 points with four rebounds in the title game win over Lakeland. The junior scored the last six points of the title game, turning an 87-82 deficit into a one-point win.
Defiance will travel to rival Bluffton Wednesday and face conference frontrunner Transylvania Saturday afternoon.
In other action...
No. 25 Transylvania (10-1, 4-0 HCAC) earned a 3-1 record over the holiday break and tied the best start in school history with a win over La Verne in Las Vegas.
The Pioneers opened the break, earning the title at the Don Lane Invitational with a 66-61 win over No. 14 ranked Wabash.
Transylvania junior forward Brandon Rash (Mt. Sterling, Ky./Montgomery Co.) led the Pioneers over the break and was named the MVP of the Don Lane Classic. Rash scored 42 points in the event as TU knocked off Hendrix and Wabash.
The junior also scored 21 points in a 73-64 win over La Verne and added 24 points in a 66-62 loss to Gustavus Adolphus in the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.
Transy will host Franklin in HCAC action Wednesday night.
Bluffton (7-4, 1-3 HCAC) also earned a tournament title over the break, claiming the McDonald's Holiday Tournament crown for the second straight season.
The Beavers defeated Ohio St.-Lima 94-54 in the opening round and pulled out an 87-68 triumph over Grove City to cop the title.
