HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College men's basketball team defeated Transylvania University 76-73 in a championship matchup on Sunday afternoon, claiming the school's third consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament title.
Hanover shot above 50 percent from the field, and the No. 1 seed Panthers converted 11 points off of the Pioneers 11 turnovers to help propel the victory in Collier Arena. Hanover (21-6) claims the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament set to begin next week, earning its ninth trip to the NCAA field.
Leading the way for Hanover was senior guard Cam Fails. Fails averaged 24.5 points per game on 15-of-34 shooting throughout the tournament. The junior added 12 rebounds and eight assists, earning the tournament Most Valuable Player award for his efforts. Junior forward Kevin Williams averaged 16.0 points per game, and contributed 14 rebounds earning a spot on the all-tournament squad.
Transylvania's sophomore guard Michael Jefferson averaged 23.5 points and added nine assists for the Pioneers throughout the tournament, claiming a spot on the all-tournament team. Sophomore forward Lucas Gentry joined Jefferson on the all-tournament squad, averaging 22.0 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in Transylvania's two tournament games.
Bluffton's freshman guard Jameel Cosby tallied 25 points and 11 assists, earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
Franklin's Borden Kennedy earned the final spot on the all-tournament squad after averaging 17.5 points per game while adding 22 assists and 3.0 steals per game in the Grizzlies tournament contests.
Hanover will await its first round opponent in the NCAA Division III Tournament until the bracket is released. The announcement of the Division III men's basketball field will be presented via webcast on www.ncaa.com beginning at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
