Transy Golfers Shoot for Third-Straight Men's Golf Championship
TERRE HAUTE , IN - The 2009 HCAC men's golf tournament gets underway this weekend in Terre Haute , Indiana . For the third straight year, the men's golf championship will be a 72-hole format with the first two rounds set for the 7,225 yard par 72 Hulman Links Golf Club in Terre Haute on Saturday and Sunday. The final rounds will take place at the 6,749 yard par 72 Aston Oaks Golf Club in North Bend, Ohio on May 1-2.
The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships which will be held on May 13-16 in Port St. Lucie , Florida.
Transylvania University will enter the tournament as the two-time defending champion. The Pioneers earned their second conference championship, defeating second place Franklin by 61 strokes last spring. Transy recently defeated the conference field by 20 strokes at the Rose-Hulman Invitational, hosted at Hulman Links Golf Club on April 18-19. Mount St. Joseph finished second at the event and defeated Transy on April 4-5 at Ashton Oaks Golf Club by 11 strokes.
Transylvania's Bradley Sutherland (Cadiz, Ky./Trigg Co.) returns to defend his conference individual title. The senior shot a four round total of 297 to earn medalist honors last spring, helping his Pioneers to the championship. Anderson senior Tyler Daniels (Clayton , Ohio /Northmont) finished ten shots behind Sutherland last spring to finish second.
Transylvania has received very consistent play from several individuals, placing four players on the top five scoring average list for the conference this spring. Transy's Matthew Martin (Winchester , Ky. ) and Greg Turcotte (West Bloomfield , Mich. ) joined Sutherland on the All-HCAC team last season and will look for a similar result this spring.
The top eight finishers after the four rounds are complete will earn All-HCAC honors. The top freshman finisher will receive the Freshman of the Year award. Action will get underway Saturday at 10:00 AM, with action continuing Sunday morning at 8:00 AM.
