FRANKLIN, IN – The 2010 HCAC men’s golf tournament gets underway this weekend in Franklin, Indiana.  For the fourth straight year, the men’s golf championship will be a 72-hole format with the first two rounds set for the 6,651 yard par 72 Legends of Indiana Golf Club in Franklin on Saturday and Sunday.  The final rounds will take place at Kettenring Country Club in Defiance, Ohio on May 1-2.

The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships which will be held on May 11-14 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Transylvania University will enter the tournament as the three-time defending champion.  The Pioneers earned their third conference championship, defeating second place Franklin by 37 strokes last spring.  Transy recently finished second behind Franklin at the Defiance Invitational, hosted at Kettenring Country Club on April 10-11.  The Grizzlies edged the Pioneers by a single stroke at the 36-hole event.

Two-time defending champion Bradley Sutherland of Transylvania graduated last spring, leaving the top spot up for grabs in 2010.  Transy’s James Dawson (Bardstown, Ky./Bethlehem) and Franklin’s Eric Whitaker (Coatesville, Ind./North Putnam) placed second last spring, finishing four shots behind Sutherland in the standings.

Transylvania has received very consistent play from several individuals, placing six players on the top ten scoring average list for the conference this spring.  Transy’s Matthew Martin (Winchester, Ky.) joined Dawson on the All-HCAC team last season and will look for a similar result this spring.

The top eight finishers after the four rounds are complete will earn All-HCAC honors.  The top freshman finisher will receive the Freshman of the Year award.  Action will get underway Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 PM.
