Transylvania Claims Fifth Straight HCAC Men’s Golf Championship

ANDERSON, IN – Transylvania University’s Justin Tereshko (Madison, Ind./H.S.) fired a four-round score of 308 at the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Conference Championship at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. and Anderson Country Club in Anderson, Ind. to lead the Pioneers to their fifth straight HCAC Men’s Golf title. Transylvania tallied a team-score of 1,255, holding off second place Mount St. Joseph’s total of 1,283.
Tereshko shot a first-round 85 and returned in the final three rounds to shoot a 77, 73, and 73 to finish second among individuals.
Franklin’s Eric Whitaker (Coatesville, Ind./North Putnam) earned medalist honors at the tournament and has been named the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player. The senior fired a four-day total of 305, including a one-under par 71 in the third round.
Transylvania’s Clay Hinton (Elizabethtown, Ky./H.S.) finished third in the standings to earn the conference’s Freshman of the Year honor. Hinton finished with a total of 310, finishing five shots off the lead.
The Pioneers had one other top-five finish at the meet, placing
freshman Jantzen Latham (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg
Co.) in the fifth position. Latham totaled a 317 at
the four-round event.
Whitaker, Tereshko, Hinton, and Latham all earned All-HCAC recognition. Joining the group on the All-HCAC team are Hanover College’s Terry Smith (Peru, Ind./H.S.), Anderson University’s Daniel Elliott (Hope, Ind./Hauser), College of Mount St. Joseph’s Kenny Brosnan (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), and Franklin College’s J.J. Burns (Roachdale, Ind./North Putnam).
Mount St. Joseph finished second behind the Pioneers with a team score of 1,283. Franklin placed third with a total of 1,291, while Hanover finished fourth in the team standings with a total of 1,302. Anderson tallied 1,353 team strokes for fifth place and was trailed by Defiance (1,355), Rose-Hulman (1,393), and Manchester (1,405).
Transylvania head coach Brian Lane was also honored by the HCAC and named Coach of the Year. Lane earned the honor for the fifth time after leading the Pioneers to their fifth straight HCAC men’s golf championship.
