GREENWOOD, IN - The Transylvania University men's golf team and Franklin College's women's golf team are set to take part in the NCAA Division III Championships this week. The men and women will play May 14-17 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.
Transy, which finished 2nd in the NCAA tourney last year, earned their way into the event by claiming their seventh straight HCAC title. It will be the Pioneers’ seventh straight appearance in the national event.
TU's players are among a total of 210 participants, including 30 teams that won their respective conference championships, four independents or schools whose conferences do not receive automatic qualifiers, and seven schools that received at-large bids.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams after the first 36 holes of play.
The competitive field includes 19 of the top 25 ranked teams, including the defending champions. The Pioneers enter the race ranked No. 11 in the Golf Week/Nike coaches' poll, and are rolling in with winning momentum.
The Grizzlies’ women’s squad will also compete in the 72 hole event down in Destin, Florida and will be making the school's second straight NCAA appearance.
Franklin earned automatic qualification for the NCAA finals event by winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title last October.
FC finished 18th among the 19 schools competing in last season's NCAA championship event.
